Little Estonia (1.4 million inhabitants, as much as in the Greater Helsinki region alone) is probably the smallest spacefaring nation on Earth, with the launch of its ESTCUBE-1 satellite from Kourou Spaceport in French Guyana, May 7, 2013... which has been functioning flawlessly since.

ESTCube-1 Survives Collision Threat

Estonia's first satellite, ESTCube-1, is reported to be out of danger from a possible collision with space debris that had threatened to end the student satellite mission Friday morning.

The satellite's mission control was not able to verify that it had survived until 10:07, when the first signal was to be received as it passed over Estonia.

The nanosatellite, which measures just 10 centimeters on a side, was launched on May 7 and is orbiting the Earth at 7.5 km per second.

If all goes well, 2013 could be the year that Estonia conducts its first space mission.  ESTCube-1, a cubical one-liter nanosatellite built by students and their international partners, is now in one piece and is currently being tested for vibration endurance in Tallinn, ERR radio reported. The satellite will then be sent to Tartu, and on January 18 it will be taken to the Netherlands for final testing before it is sent into orbit.
