I appreciate the attention to pioneer Chinese American lesbian director (and Hong Kong’s first) Esther Eng, who was truly a legend, but maybe the podcast can credit me better as all of its content is from my film Golden Gate Girls (a.k.a. Golden Gate Silver Light). You can learn more from this entry, which contains a trailer. The film also weaves in stories of Hollywood’s first Asian star Anna May Wong (who is on a quarter) and Classic Hollywood’s only woman director Dorothy Arzner (in early talkie period).
Esther Eng (September 24, 1914 – January 25, 1970), born Ng Kam-ha, was a Cantonese–American film director and the first female director to direct Chinese-language films in the United States. Eng made four feature films in America, and five in Hong Kong. She was recognized as a female pioneer who crossed the boundaries of race, language, culture and gender. Eng was openly lesbian.
