Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Perched atop Toompea Hill, in the heart of Tallinn, is Estonia's main Russian Orthodox cathedral - Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Dedicated to Alexander Nevsky, the Prince who reigned over Novgorod in the 13th century, construction work on this onion-domed magnificent building began in 1894 and was finally completed in 1900. The architecture is heavily reliant on the Russian church architecture of that time, which makes sense, as Estonia was then part of the massive Russian Czar empire. This large and richly decorated church filled with mosaics and icons was designed by Mikhail Preobrazhenski, a celebrated architect from St Petersburg. Peer up at the church towers and you will also see Tallinn’s ensemble of church bells comprising 11 bells and also the city's largest bell, weighing in at a hefty 15 tons.
