THEME: Eduard is given the task to help new student Kiku catch up with the music in Choir, but what was he supposed to do when he grew a crush on him?
RATING: K
Eduard wasn’t sure how things would turn out when they received a new member in the Choir. The man was an exchange student from Japan, and he was the newest boy to join their tenor section. Since they were already a few weeks in, the new boy would have to be helped to catch up the music that they were learning for the winter concert. This task was given to Eduard, due to the fact he was such a dedicated member of the group. Their teacher assumed he would be the best man to guide Kiku and quickly catch him up with the other men.
What he hadn’t expected was to grow a crush during this time. Kiku had a very charming atmosphere about him. He was so polite and full of manners that even a honors student like Eduard was overwhelmed. His English was a little lacking at times, but he found it cute. Since it wasn’t his native language either, he could understand the confusion. He was shorter than Eduard and had beautiful, black hair. His brown eyes always seemed to be lost in space, except when he grasped a page of music. Then, his eyes would light up with joy and pride. It was something to behold for certain.
During study hall, the two would meet in the Choir room. Eduard was there first, as per usual. He sat at the piano, putting out the music for them. He was pretty good at the piano, though he was no Edelstein. That boy could give Mozart a run for his money. He heard the door creak open, and Kiku walked inside. Their eyes met and they shared a smile.
“Ready for another day, Kiku?” He asked politely, happy as the boy took a seat next to him on the bench. Kiku looked at the music and noted which song Eduard had chosen for their focus today.
“Shall we get started? I-I don’t want to waste your time. I promise I am grateful for your assistance.” Kiku said for what was probably the twentieth time. He felt guilty for taking away Eduard’s free period. He had sworn he could learn it on his own, but the teacher was firm in their decision.
“You’re fine, Kiku. Now, I’ll count us in.” Eduard spoke, going to tap his foot to the rhythm and place his fingers over the ivory keys. He began to play, nodding to Kiku when he had to come in. Kiku had a lovely voice, though quiet. However, he had gotten louder over their sessions. Perhaps, he was growing comfortable around Eduard.
They went through the song together, stopping and restarting measures whenever Kiku would get lost. Kiku had come pretty far over these two weeks, being a quick learner. Eduard truly believed he had a gift. If he tried, he was sure he could even snatch a solo from one of the older boys. His voice had such a soothing quality to it.
“That was wonderful. I don’t even think we have to go over it again. You have the choral part just fine. Though, perhaps you would like to run through the men’s solo?” He suggested, getting a head shake and hands shaking in a dismissive manner.
“I-I couldn’t do that. M-My voice…it would give out, and I would likely trip up over the English words.” Kiku wasn’t the most confident, and he was still very new here. He didn’t want to anger anybody by stepping out of his boundaries.
“Your tenor voice fits it perfectly. Those other guys are basses, and they won’t sound as good with this type of song. I think you’ve got a good chance. I can teach you it. You’re almost better than some of the members in the choir with our pieces, so we could spend our time on this instead. What do you say?”
Kiku was quiet, thinking to himself. The thought of singing in front of the class made his stomach fill with knots. Would he really be able to do that? He liked the idea of having a solo since it would surely make his parents proud.
“You really believe in me that much?” He asks, looking to him hopefully. Eduard felt his cheeks heat up, making eye contact with him. He stuttered his words, his mouth suddenly bone dry.
“Y-Yeah, I know you could..uhh..d-do it!” He assures, giving him a gently pat on the back. Kiku lit up light the sky full of stars, his smile spreading ear to ear.
“Let’s do it!”
That was how Eduard and Kiku formed a friendship, working on the solo every day. He would play and give pointers to Kiku, the duo aiming for perfection. None of the others would be trying this hard. Kiku had to grab this spot! All the time, Eduard only felt his crush flourishing in his chest. It was like an entire garden was swarming his heart, squishing it tight with its vines when they were together.
When the time came for auditions, Kiku was able to stand and sing with full conviction. None of the others were as close to the music as Kiku. He astounded the class, and he was awarded for all his effort with Eduard.
At the end of that class, he went to Eduard and gave him a shy hug. He was not one for physical touch, but he had been filled with such joy. His arms wrapped around Eduard, giving him a faint squeeze. The hug was reciprocated as Eduard held him there, smiling bright. His heart sped up, only getting worse by the pink tinting Kiku’s cheeks.
“You did it. I knew you could.” Eduard smiles, breaking apart. He felt a hand grasp his own, letting out a soft gasp.
