(W2) Intro to Doc Ch1,2,10: Definition, Ethical issues and Preproduction of Documentary Filmmaking
The author, Bill Nichols, introduces us about mockumentary (In the middle of the page12). But, I was confused about whether mockumentary is also a style of documentary or it’s just a form of fiction film. According to Bill Nichols, documentary is about something that actually happened (page5), but mockumentary is obviously all planned, staged and acted by the filmmakers.
Q1. Can I adopt mockumentary as a form of documentary like reenactment?
It is common to compensate actors in narrative films. But, in documentary films, it is awkward to talk about compensation because the social actors are not actually performing like professional actors (page33). In documentary, the relationship between the subject and the filmmakers are very tricky. But, giving the social actors some financial compensation may encourage them to be more cooperated to the production in general.
Q2. Would it create an ethical problem for documentary filmmaking to give social actors some financial compensation? And, would it effects their future “performance”?
Meeting the people who are related with topics is important as we should learn about the topics in a library (page 219). But, it’s pretty hard to tell when it would be the right time to meet the people. Their time is limited, but we need to prepare some proposals, treatments and even questionnaire to make them cooperate to the preproduction. It’s not even the production yet.
Q3. When would be the right time to meet people? (not for the production but for the preproduction)
Isolation of the marketing function with the operation. The marketing team has been given importance for the new strategy of Samsung. But it is the operation team who will look after the manufacturing process and they are the main connector
AA- Fashion Brand or Sex Label?
American Apparel is undoubtedly universally known for their striking fashion campaigns and ‘Interesting’ ways of visually promoting their clothing. However, how far is too far?
Over the last 12 months American Apparel have been badly bitten by the media due to their ads ‘Overly sexualising every aspect of a woman’. This ongoing controversial issue is leading to boycotts and bans, but surely in 2016 a woman’s right to reveal her body is prominent and important to society which leads me to question- ‘Why don’t brands reserve the same right to publicise such a natural element?’.
American Apparel have a round about idea about how to advertise.
Compared to other brands and their mind numbing, dull and repetitive ways of merchandising and advertising- American Apparel intelligently draws upon what appeals to society at the time in order to launch their line.
Fashionistas will be well aware of the rivalries between high-street and high-end designers and labels, but why does the media and other critics turn away from noticing the amount of sexual advertising for brands like DOLCE & GABBANA? #takingsides
Ethical issue: Who gets experimental Ebola drug?
The use of an experimental drug to treat two Americans diagnosed with Ebola is raising ethical questions about who gets first access to unproven new therapies for the deadly disease. But some health experts fear debate over extremely limited doses will distract from tried-and-true measures to curb the growing outbreak.

I am debating whether or not to get (real) badger claw earrings online. I'm not really sure how I feel about it ethically although none of the animals were killed purely for the product, they were leftovers from taxidermy work.So yeah, any one have any thoughts about it? Cause I'm really not too sure at all.
