EthiX is a TransID alternative. Ethi- comes from ethical, 8ut the way I got there was through the Greek word epithymia, which transl8s to wish. EthiX can also be spelled EthyX so EthyID would look 8etter, either works.
I assume you’re referring to this coining post.
I agree ethiX resolves a lot of the problems transX has. There’s really only one aspect of the definition that I feel needs some elaboration.
EthiX supports transition for -abled terms under certain conditions. While the conditions are fine, and reasonable, it wholeheartedly supports transition when those conditions are met.
…And this is fine for people with BIID who desire to amputate a limb. But a problem arises when considering the entire scope of transabled.
Transabled includes transautistic, which cannot be transitioned to as autism is a developmental brain difference from birth. It includes trans- chronic illnesses, in which the only way to physically transition would be causing excessive pain. It even includes mental disorders such as eating disorders that can be considered disabilities as well. Being disabled is a wide spectrum, so being transabled must be. Missing a limb isn’t the only type of disability there is.
(The definition mentions having a condition “like” BIID makes using ethiX okay, but there are plenty of conditions out there that might influence whether a person wants to be disabled. This ties into how wide the scope of disability is.)
I can’t ethically condone transition for some ethiX labels as a result. Perhaps these scenarios were just an oversight on the coiner’s part, and I hope they were. At any rate ethiX is a good concept. I’d love to be able to fully support it.
