          like  a  magician  pulling  tricks  from  his  hat,   ambrose  dives  inside  his  gym  bag  and  begins  unloading  its  contents,   declaring  each  item  as  it  hits  the  table.   ❝   swiss  rolls.   swiss  cheese.   ❞   he  twists  the  lid  off  his  thermos  and  fills  it  with  cocoa  before  (   gently !   )   nudging  it  toward  her.   ❝   swiss  miss.   i’m  a  july  baby   ---   camp  season   ---   and  i  know  how  much  it  sucks  being  away  from  home  on  your  birthday.   so  i  thought   .  .  .    ❞   ambrose  trails  off,   swagger  wiped  away  like  windex  on  a  bathroom  mirror,   leaving  him  completely  exposed.   this  was  stupid.   no,   this  was  beyond  stupid.   a  mini - mart  haul ?   these  weren’t  even  swiss  rolls   ---   they  only  had  ho-hos !   swallowing  his  pride  and  praying  to  gaia  she’d  find  his  gift  more  charming  than  pathetic,   he  shoves  another  grin  to  the  forefront.   ❝   why  not  bring  a  little  home  to  you ?   at  least,   with  whatever  i  could  scrounge  up  at  ok.   happy  birthday,   by  the  way.   did  i  forget  to  say  that ?   ❞

       it was only in recent weeks that celeste had started dipping her toes back in with her old habits. with her pain reasonably under control most days, it left her with more of a clear ahead and the desire to move like she hadn’t for the better part of a year and a half. while she was rusty, her own practice with alej to bring her back up to speed was proving to be not only useful, but a good and familiar outlet. when it came to adeline, celeste hadn’t been entirely sure she was up to the task of helping her train given her recent period of  inactivity, but she knew that watching and helping someone else was a different situation entirely. those who can’t do teach, as they say, and so celeste had been meeting regularly with adeline to help her hone her combat abilities. 

       they’ve found an empty spot in the training grounds to work on, and while celeste never plans on going easy on addie, the moment she catches an opening, she decides to break away rather than put adeline on her back. it’s still early and celeste figures her expectations should match that. “ don’t rush, ” she comments, stepping back and squinting as she shields her eyes from the sun.  “ when you go too quickly, you’ll get sloppy with your movements. first learn to do it slowly. speed will come once you’ve done it perfected it. i’lll match your pace, so don’t worry about that. ” celeste pauses for a moment before looking at the dummies propped up not too far away and then turning back to adeline. “ let’s practice on one of those –– you’ll be less likely to give into the instinct to quicken your pace if your opponent isn’t moving. ”
