I'm not really in the Bleach fandom, just a casual manga/anime fan buuuut the ending was weird, I think? When you ask a non-Bleach fan if they know any Bleach ship, I guarantee you, they'd totally answer, the black-haired girl and the protagonist guy. Heck, I think most people did not see this coming!
Here’s the thing:
My biology teacher is only up to episode four, but even he was shocked when I told him the ending of Bleach. And right away, he knew that he needed to comfort his wife, the person who dragged him into the franchise, once she read the chapter.
My classmates, who know about Bleach through my rants/snapchat/casual live watching of Bleach, KNOW that Ichigo and Rukia were supposed to end up together. When they found out that that was not what happened, even they felt bad. And you know what they said? “It’s a good thing I haven’t started watching/reading Bleach…”
And there’s my school librarian. She stopped watching when the Soul Society arc ended, which had been YEARS ago. But despite that, she always knew that they would endgame. And me, being the one who’s been keeping her up to date since I found out that she was a Bleach fan, told her what had happened. I can tell you right now that she was SALTY to the extent where students were surprised to see that side of her.
Then there’s me.
I got into the fandom around 2010, back when it was still high and mighty with its nice climax. You’d think I would have shipped the ‘canon’ ships, but considering how I started it from the very beginning, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. Hell, I even skipped bits and pieces of the Soul Society Arc (the arc that was considered to be Rukia’s) and I STILL KNEW that THOSE TWO WERE SUPPOSED TO END UP TOGETHER. EVERYTHING just pointed towards them, despite being only in nine years of existence at that time, and even if you were to not understand the entirety of it.
Truth be told, you’re right. Considering how the fandom was blowing up everywhere when the chapter came out, there was probably only what? 10% who were celebrating over its end? IT JUST DIDN’T MAKE SENSE. AT ALL. ZERO. LIKE IF MY FRIEND TOOK A SHOT FOR EVERY SINGLE TIME SHE HEARD ME SAY, “I’m so confused,” SHE WOULD HAVE PROBABLY ENDED UP AT THE HOSPITAL. BECAUSE I WAS LITERALLY CONFUSED. NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SHIPS, BUT BECAUSE????? WTF HAPPENED???????????
And god, Anon, I pray that you never have to experience what we went through. It’s a shit feeling; being a massive fan of a franchise for years, only to be dropped in the end. If you’re planning to get into a shounen manga, try out Fullmetal Alchemist!!! AT LEAST THAT ONE MADE SENSE.
