STRESS IN THE EXAM PERIOD.
You cannot seem to focus, even the smallest things get to you, you feel anxious and worried most of the time, and sleep hours never seem to be enough. These are just some of the most common symptoms when dealing with the most stressful week of all the marking period; “Exam week”. What is it about this particular week that gets the best out of all of us, students? Is it because of the quantity and variety of subjects that we carry? Or is it the amount of homework and the overall work given to us? Or is it just because we do not study enough? It can be just one or all the previous really, when it comes to “stress”, each student deals with it in a different way. But there are, however, some methods proposed to help students carry on during this outrageous week. I will explain two particular ones that I find helpful.
Teachers are there for a reason, to help you. Take all the opportunities you can to talk to them and explain them all your doubts; they will help gladly most of the times. When talking about “tutoring” not only teachers will do the trick, ask for help among your friends and colleagues, it will surprise you how much they are willing to help you. And most importantly if you do decide to get the help from a tutor, make an effort! People will always help you with what they can as long as you show real interest in learning, so always do your best.
I have discuss earlier how much, the smallest things get straight to your nerves, sometimes even taking a five-minute break will help loose the tension. This leads me to the next method, “Having time for relaxation and leisure activities”. Take some time to indulge yourself, step aside from everything and everyone for just a minute and take a deep breath, it will surprise you how much it helps. Finding something to do besides staying until two in the morning studying will reduce the amount of stress you carry above your shoulders, common activities such as gardening, drawing and exercising will allow you to forget about the stress, even if it is just for a moment.
As a fellow student I understand perfectly how stressful, not even exam week, but life can get at some points, but we need to remember that not everything in life if getting straight A’s at school. We must learn to enjoy what comes across our faces and as one of my favourite songs from Frozen, to “let it go”.
Purépechas
The purépechas, were erroneously called tarascos also, this means brother-in- law, they’re a village who lived in the nord west of the Mexican state, Michoacán, mainly in the town of pátzcuaro and Uruapan. In the prehispanic age, this village occupied most of Michoacán state, but they also occupied some of the inferior valleys of Guanajuato and Jalisco. Celaya, Ácambaro and Yurirapúndaro were also in the purépecha territory. Talking about the religion, well, I can say that the purépecha religion was polytheistic, this means that they had multiple gods, it was based around a universe that had three parts, these are, the heaven, earth and underworld. There were three supreme gods, who were idolized Norge than any other, The most important was Curicaveri, this is the god of war and the sun. Some of the offerings they made to this god were auto sacrifices. His dominion was the heaven, it was associated with eagles, hawks, and other birds. Cuerauáperi was a goddess, wife of the sun’s god, Curicaveri, she was a creating goddess, she was the Mother Earth, which controlled the life and rain, the dead and drought. The most important descendent of this goddess, was Xaratanga, she was the goddess of the sea and the moon. Her dominion was the Pacific Ocean and Se was simbolized as an owl, an old woman or a coyote. It also existed the goddess of the bad, she was Auicamine. So as other mesoamerican cultures, the purépecha one participated in human sacrifices, but it was in lesser extent than his enemies, the Aztecs. Personally I love this culture, I think it is wonderful and one of the most complete cultures, I’m also impressed that they had that kind of religion because they were very similar to the Catholic one and it is also better than catholic in some ways because, for example, they weren’t afraid of the dead ones, the underworld was for the dead ones and there were no hell or heaven like now, what they referred to heaven was something else and I think that was a good way of living. I live purépechas. So long, Karla Isabel.
THE PURÉPECHAS, AN ANCIENT MEXICAN CULTURE.
So, here's a tiny article about the "Purépechas" one of México's most important ancient civilizations.
Situated among the vast mountains, the “Purépechas”, also known as “Tarascans”, they reined in the “Patzcuaro” river, and in its nearby site “Tzintzunzan”. Know to be excellent craft workers, working their hands with different materials such as; coal, wood and clay which they made pottery with. Corn, honey, cotton and gold have very high value within the “Purépecha” culture. Society was divided into classes, the nobility, conformed by a man named “Cazonzi”, and his wives, the peasants, where warriors, craft man stood in, and of course the slaves. Even though their buildings and religious centres where proven to be nothing more than rural constructions called “Yacatás” with the exception of “Tzintzunzan, which was the capital of the “Purépecha” empire. The “Purépechas” were known to have a various number of gods and deities; there were specific gods for rain, fire, reaping, etc. The Aztecs tried numerous times to conquer over the “Purépechas”, but for some reason they never achieved the goal, there are even records where it says that when the two cultures got into a massive war, the Aztec’s were forced to retreat, due to that most of the Aztec army was severely injured. This culture didn’t used to keep a record about their culture or history, unlike the Aztecs, the “Purépecha” people didn`t leave history behind them. Personal items were buried among the person who had died. Finally the conquest came by, and the Purépechas like most of the other Mexican cultures were suppressed and conquered, not without a little fight tough. Vasco de Quiroga took over Michoacán as the governor of the “Purépecha” villages. Even today around Patzcuaro and Tzintzunzan we can still see the remains of this fascinating culture, there are still people that contain within their veins authentic “Purépecha” heritage.
Innumeracy - Mathematical Illiteracy
Innumeracy is the inability to deal comfortably with the fundamental notions of number and chance.
A lot of people nowadays tend to think that mathematics are useless for the everyday life. Some of them even express a perverse pride when talking about their lack of mathematical abilities. And unlike other failings which are often of a more subtle nature, mathematical illiteracy is oft flaunted as seen in these common phrases: "I always hated math", "I'm a people person, not a math person", "how will this be of use for me in the future?".
A reason why innumeracy happens is because its consequences aren't as easy to see as other weaknesses. Moreover, some of the blocks to dealing comfortably with numbers and probabilities are due to natural psychological responses to uncertainty, coincidence, or how a problem is framed. For instance, the fear of death-by-shark-attack. How we point our focus to the scant yearly annals, while ignoring the rest of the statistics.
Even more ominous is the gap between scientists' assessments of various risks and the interpretation of the layman. This gap threatens eventually to lead either to unfounded and crippling anxieties or to impossible and economically paralyzing demands for risk-free guarantees.
Hereinafter, I will expose an example regarding the risk of contracting AIDS heterosexually, with the intention of demonstrating the importance of being conscious of statistics.
The chance of getting AIDS in a single unprotected heterosexual episode form a partner known to have the disease is about one in five hundred. Thus, the probability of not getting it in such an encounter is 499/500. If the risks are independent, the probability of not getting it after two consecutive encounters is of (499/500)^2, and after N encounters (499/500)^N. Since (499/500)^346 = 1/2, one runs about a fifty percent chance of not getting AIDS in unsafe heterosexual intercourse everyday for almost a year, with a person known to have the disease.
Using a condom, the risk of being infected from a single heterosexual episode with someone known to have the disease goes down to 1/5000. By similar reasoning as the above, we conclude that having safe sex everyday for ten years with such a person leads to a fifty percent chance of getting the disease.
If you don't know whether or not your partner has AIDS, the chance per episode of getting infected is one in five million unprotected. One in fifty million using a condom. We therefore conclude that you are more likely to die in a car crash on the way home from such a tryst.
It is noteworthy to see that the reasoning mentioned in the above paragraphs does not encourage people to secure themselves more or less; it is simply stating that you need to be aware of numbers, probabilities, and their semantic connotations.
