March 17th marks #StPatricksDay, but Boston also marks #EvacuationDay on which the British troops occupying the city were forced to abandon their positions as General Washington took a strategic location overlooking the city. . Earlier in November of 1775 Henry Knox was sent west to Fort Ticonderoga in Upstate New York to fetch cannon abandoned by the British. These were delivered to George Washington near his headquarters in Cambridge. You can find a monument that marks the spot where the cannon were delivered in Harvard Square. . After sustaining heavy losses at the Battle of Bunker Hill the British occupation of Boston was already nearing an end. These cannons positioned on Dorchester Heights on the night of March 4th were out of range of the British Navy blockading the harbor and could hit targets anywhere in British occupied Boston. After poor weather foiled a counter-attack by British General Thomas Howe, an agreement was struck allowing the British Army & Colonial loyalists to peacefully evacuate (lest they sack the city on their retreat).
