“Sorry about my roommates,” Barty laughed. Something about the way Barty said it made Evan bubble over with laughter. He threw his head back and everything. He’d be embarrassed, but it was Barty, and somehow that meant something. Evan wasn’t sure what yet, but he wanted to see.
He reined his laughter in and felt himself blushing again when Barty smiled at him shyly. “ I really do mean it about the watch, though. Thank you, Evan. It’s truly one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. The only ones who’ve ever done anything nice for me are Sirius, Remus and Re—” Barty suddenly snapped his mouth shut, a flash of pain rippling across his face. That awful mask slipped back onto Barty’s face. “So, yeah, thanks. I need coffee,” Barty turned away and disappeared into the kitchen. Evan looked at the spot Barty had been standing in, his brow furrowing as he frowned, trying to figure out what had happened to make Barty change so quickly. Evan hadn’t mentioned his father again so…
He closed his eyes and sighed. Regulus. Barty had been about to mention Regulus right after he’d just kissed Evan. Regulus had been the love of Barty’s life; he probably still was.
It was coming up to the two-year anniversary of his death. Barty probably felt wrong for kissing Evan. From what Sirius had said, Barty pretended to shag around, but it was all to keep up his reputation, so people left him alone, but as far as Sirius knew, Barty hadn’t had any kind of relationship with anyone since Regulus. Evan paled. Oh, was he Barty’s first kiss since? No, he’d just watched him happily kiss Remus, and they definitely looked comfortable together. His mind jumped to all the times Barty had mentioned a threesome between them. He found he hated the idea of Barty being with Sirius and Remus. So no, that couldn’t be it. They’d all been through a lot together, so of course they were close. He gritted his teeth and followed Barty into the kitchen.
“How many times do I have to tell you, B? Regulus would want you to move on. To be happy.”
“No, he wouldn’t. He’d track down whoever I was seeing and stab them.” Barty’s words sounded wet, and Evan heard a sniffle.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. But I bet he’d have loved Evan.” Sirius’s words were quiet, sweet. Evan’s heart broke just a little bit. He walked around the corner and wrapped his arms around Barty. Something had shifted inside him, and now he refused to give up on this absolute broken menace. He held him tight, and Barty collapsed into him, soaking in whatever Evan was giving.
“I’d just stab him back,” he whispered into Barty’s ear, and Barty’s wet laugh was all he needed to know he’d said the right thing.
“Oh, yeah, he’d definitely have liked you,” Sirius grinned at him. Evan had no idea if Regulus would have, but he trusted Sirius, so he shrugged and pulled Barty tighter against him.
