April 28th 2014 (and other dates)
So a few things have happened over the past few days.
First, I've moved out and am back at home in the States. I'll be staying here for the next few months until September rolls around again. Well, actually, I'm going on a trip with my mother to see parts of England. I'm not sure what the itinerary looks like, but it'll be fun.
Anyway, since I'm going to be here for a longer time than a week, I made then ran an ethernet cable down to my room so that I could have internet. It wasn't as hard as I was expecting. Now I've got blazing fast internet without all the errors from interference. Or at least not as many errors. It knocked my ping time down to a quarter of what it was before so I'm really noticing the speed boost. Then since I have my own routers in my room, I can either plug in or use my wifi. When I first hooked everything up, the cable didn't work when I hooked it up through the router, but did work when I directly plugged it into my computer. I thought it was pretty weird so I started checking the cable to make sure I didn't switch any wires, which I hadn't. Then I went in and check the router settings. Turns out that my parents set their router to 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1, which was what I was expecting. Then I set my router to 192.168.2.1 and everything worked fine. Pretty fun troubleshooting.
Then I cleaned out my server and did a bunch of maintenance and upgrades on it. Took it outside and sprayed it with the air compressor. There was so much dust everywhere, I'm glad I took it outside to do it. I think my laptops could take some blowing out too, but that is for later. Then I plugged everything back in and it started up so smoothly.
Anyway, I'm still unpacking. I have my clothing put away, still working on textbooks and computer stuff though. I have so many cables. I have at least 20 ethernet cables of assorted lengths. I have so many usb cables that I don't even want to count. While it is a little insane, it does come in handy at times to have way too many cables. Very rarely am I without a cable that will fit. I don't have any cables for apple products though, so don't even try. I'm starting to get re-situated again though.
I am definitely noticing that home doesn't feel as much like home as it used to. Yesterday, I noticed that I was thinking "'Murica" way more than I usually do. It is a little sad, but also a bit funny. I mentioned it to my mom, but she had no clue what I was talking about.
On the ferry ride, I met a couple who were going on holiday. There weren't any seats left. When the cafe opened, I decided to head back and see if there was anywhere that I could sit and work. I found what appeared to be an empty table. There was a magazine sitting on top of it, but no backpacks, no purses, nothing, so I assumed it was unoccupied. It wasn't, but the people who had it were nice. They were going on a road trip down to San Diego for fun. It is pretty impressive road trip going from Canada All the way basically to the border of Mexico. That is a long trip to make. They of course were stopping to see some sights though, such as Yosemite. The lady said that they were not going to go see SeaWorld because of how bad it is to keep wild animals in captivity. After she said that he suggested that maybe they do go see it and make their own opinions. While he has a valid argument, he totally just wanted to go see stuff for fun. I thought it was kind of funny. So while I still didn't get any work done, it was quite a bit better than standing searching for a seat for an hour and a half. The drive home was fairly uneventful. I got gas when I got off the ferry, then just kept driving for a few hours.
I had spent the night before going home at my roommate's (now ex-roommate) house. That was really nice of him. I was not looking forward to that evening. I had everything packed into the car and the house was completely clean, and no food in the refrigerator, so I was expecting to get dinner at Tim Hortons, sleep on the couch, the go in the morning. So actually having food and a place other than the couch to sleep was really nice. It does add about an hour to the drive though. I woke up at about 5:30 which wasn't that fun, then was gone by 6:30. Even though I was at the ferry terminal by 7:30, I wasn't even close to the first car. While I was able to catch the ferry, it was pretty tight.
That was most of what happened if I recall. Now I'm just working on getting re-situated and getting back to work on programming stuff.
