evan feels kind of like a working dog without a job a lot of the time. too much energy, too little routine, too in need of something to expend it all. and GOD he likes having fun. it's like – SUPER easy for him to inspire laughter and joy amongst his friends. that includes august. he didn't remember how they met – call that a consequence of his propensity to hit his fucking head, but HEY ?? who cares ?? they're here NOW, and evan's got another one of those shit eating grins on his face, like he knows this is insane but he's having too much fun to CARE. he always has too much fun to care. there's like – this pressure that exists under his skin and needs to be expelled with reckless abandon.
he definitely DOESN'T interrogate the way he always ends up here when he falls too hard, or even not that hard like today, just because he likes the gentle car with which august always seems to patch him up. teddy's just like – kind of not that good at it. that's all this is, right ?? no need to worry about the tenderness in his grasp or the way his attention feels like so much FUN !!
don't be stupid. this isn't the first time, it won't be the last. it's easy to laugh, because he's RIGHT of course. there's like – this inherent risk that comes with the kind of activities he partakes in. he's throwing himself down a mountain, and spinning over his shoulder at a speed that people definitely aren't supposed to move at, and sometimes, when he's an idiot, he overshoots and gets a mouth full of snow. or in today's case, can't stick the landing and crashes straight into metal.
the gentle nature of his hands on his face feels like a reminder of the reasons he should protect his face. the reasons he shouldn't break himself. and august leans close, checking over his work, and his breath feels hot against evan's face. doesn't mean anything, right ?? he might think he's being anything other than casual, but evan's hit his head enough times that even if he DIDN'T spend his whole life avoiding the way his chest gnawed sometimes, with a level of attention focused on his friends that he couldn't name the differences in, he still probably wouldn't notice. oblivion in the face of anything but fresh powder and showing up for people. "i don't think it counts as playing doctor instead of seeking medical attention if you're actually qualified." he laughs, bright smile on his face. "but i really did only hit my face once. and i'm kind of thinking i'll get the shoulder checked on next week at the doctor. it was NOT that bad. promise."
