Evander Holyfield's Boxing video game career began after Sega's previous boxing icon, James "Buster" Douglas, was defeated in the third round by Holyfield. Not wanting to be left out, Sega picked up the Evander Holyfield license. Unlike the previous effort, this would not be a conversion of a Taito arcade original; rather, this time it was worked on by American and British teams under Sega of America's wing.

Evander Holyfield is easily the best and most realistic of the 16-bit boxing titles. The fighters, ring, and crowd look sharp, and a fine bikini-clad babe introduces each round. The boxers are viewed waist-up from the side, providing a close vantage point. Considering all the punch combinations you can throw, the three-button control scheme is well-designed. Unfortunately, like so many boxing games, the controls seem less responsive as your boxer lags behind your commands. Then again, conserving your energy (as opposed to button mashing) is a key part of the strategy. The attractive graphics feature realistic details, including facial cuts and flying sweat. In addition to the one or two-player exhibition mode, you can create your own boxer and work your way up to the championship in the Career mode. Real Deal is definitely one game that sports fans won't want to miss.

The engine that made this game tick would later be improved upon and reworked as Greatest Heavyweights.

First day of the new year so it is time to look back!

Most people these days know Evander Holyfield from his legendary run as a heavyweight. His fights with Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, John Ruiz, Lennox Lewis, Michael Moorer, Riddick Bowe, Buster Douglas, etc. But it is at cruiserweight where Holyfield established himself as one of the best in the world. The 1984 Olympic bronze medalist stormed onto the cruiserweight scene in shortly after his debut in '84. The division had only been around a few years at the point and while there were a number of champions, it did not have the luster of a lot of the other divisions at the time. 11 fights into his pro career, he went face to face with Dwight Muhammad Qawi.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi was one of the best fights in the world in 1986. He was a former WBC and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion before moving up to the newly formed cruiserweight division. At 5'7, he was never the bigger fighter but was so extremely skilled that he still found ways to dominate opposition.
