what a unique devastation, what an unfair tragedy, when two people love each other so dearly, and lose it twice over. when two people, both have to mourn each other, both alone, on separate timelines. a grief doubled, and intensified by isolation. how unfair.
The Ring Of Brass, for a significant amount of time: *distraught and estanged over the loss of Evandrin, keeping secrets, making poor choices, so on, capped by one night and two seconds of disaster and carnage and horror*
Evandrin, the whole time, apparently: *chilling in limbo, twiddling his thumbs, safe*
Evandrin pleading with Zerxus, saying there has to be something, there has to be a way. Because of the two of them, only one has done their time mourning. Zerxus, suffering, alone, devastated, struggling through grief, battling it. Evandrin, safe, but alone, always assuming there would be more time.
And now, here: Zerxus, being the one to pass on, Evandrin struggling for time, trying to bargain, trying to problem solve. Zerxus, just tired, so tired, because he'd already done this. He's already done this.
Was losing my mind on Imogen and Laerryn parallels but holy shit Xerxus and Evandrin: you might be his by foul magic but I vow this I bear your name on this stone and one day I will bring you home" 😭

Oh! Oh 🥺 gosh. The Calamity vibes truly are strong in this ep. On the bright side! None of the Bell's Hells had to trade their soul in for an eternity of serving a betrayer god! ..... yet.

(although- if I may- because i also really liked the tragedy of the story that was already told, about loving others and being loved so fiercely and damning yourself anyway. Choosing that painful eternity to buy precious hours for those you love, to claw together a few more breaths for a burning world. A frantic embrace after so long, relief that turns to sorrow and horror so quickly. All they got were a few moments, at the end of it all. Sometimes that is all you get. Sometimes it's enough.)
(... but also, they deserve a happy ending, dammit, so I see the appeal. )

Oh, absolutely. Man, I'd forgotten how soft and sad and tender this song was. Songs about grief and love and loss and missing people are really Something Else, huh. And Luis just SNUCK IT IN to his takeover!!! And we didn't even know it! Incredible.
And the lyrics- yeah. Specifically, the repeated refrain of

really cut deep. On so many levels. Its about Evandrin being Avalir's First Knight, with Zerxus as an unwilling substitute. Its about an estranged son at home. Its about Zerxus, of course, of course, and the way you love people and they love you and how it turns them into a home, and the way that feels when they go missing. Just. Ah man.
(And the added gut punch of knowing what actually happened to Evandrin, of Evandrin offering himself to go to a different plane and never quite coming back, Evandrin wasting away, literally fading out of reality. The illusion of Evandrin, trapped and suffering in the Tree of Names.
Evandrin never got to come home, did he?)
