I moved James to a spot without grass that is closer to my wood supply, added some pavers, and have another burn going. Some of that paint is stubborn and doesn't want to burn off. Cleaning burnt paint flakes is significantly easier than trying to brush or grind unburnt paint off so I'd rather it do what I want. If that paint just won't budge, I'll wait to repaint James until after the syrup season.

I'm also putting up a temporary fence to keep the dogs out cause they get closer to James than they do my regular firepit even though James gets significantly hotter. I guess the lack of a visible flame makes them think it's safe when it's not.

Boiling Sap for Maple Syrup. Concord, MA. 2017

Since I can't ever just dip my toes into a hobby... Step one of my next project complete.

This barrel stove will eventually be a sap evaporator. Once the paint is fully burnt and brushed off I'm going to coat it with high heat paint and cut two big holes in the top for a pair of large pans that will boil and concentrate maple sap into maple syrup. Today's burn was just a test to see if I did it right. I'm going to put it up on blocks to get it away from the grass once I start boiling sap.

This was actually my second attempt (and barrel) at building a diy evaporator. The first one was Thomas the tar fueled jet train.
