iOS 7 Jailbreak Issues

Last night I updated my iPhone4 to 7.0.4 and jail broke it without issue. Based on that, I went ahead with my iPad Mini today, but have encountered a bit of trouble.

In both cases, the initial upgrade from 6.1.2 to 7.0.4 refused to install. iTunes produced an error 6 and left the device sitting on a progress bar. Forcing a restart put the device in DFU mode, where iTunes was then able to install 7.0.4 correctly. Unfortunately this results in a factory reset of all my settings and apps, but these can be restored from backup and re-synced.

On the iPhone this process was slow but it worked. On the iPad, however, the re-sync removed Cydia! Why I have no idea, but since Cydia isn’t officially supported on iOS 7 these kinds of oddities are to be expected. Now Cydia was definitely there after I ran Evasion, but before the restore. If I’d been smart, I would have taken the opportunity to install ssh but since I wasn’t anticipating it would go away, I didn’t bother.

So I was left with a jailbroken iPad with all of my stuff back on it, but no way to get any more updates or install anything further. My first thought was to try a manual install of Cydia, but because I hadn’t installed ssh I had no way upload the deb file. Because I hadn’t installed something like iFile, I had no way to execute the deb file if I downloaded it with Safari on the iPad.

What I ended up doing was re-running Evasion. It warns you not to do this but I went ahead. Thankfully, it reinstalls Cydia during the first part of the operation - before you execute the Evasion app it installs on the device. I did not complete this part of the process the second time. I’m already jailbroken, so I just deleted the Evasion app off my iPad and terminated the program on my host computer.
