Pet Symmetry - “Class Action Force (Useless Tools)”
(off of the forthcoming Pets Hounds)
Pet Symmetry is one of the most clever and ridiculously awesome bands out there. From their name, to their first release, Two Songs About Cars. Two Songs With Long Titles, to their upcoming full-length debut, Pets Hounds, everything about this band is a perfectly constructed joke. But they have the music to back it up. With a pedigree (pun intended) including the likes of Into It. Over It. (and all of the other Evan Weiss projects), Dowsing, Kittyhawk, and Mountains For Clouds, the band has no problem pumping out fantastically poppy, emo jams.
“Class Action Force (Useless Tools)” was released in conjunction with preorders of the new album. And let me tell you, it is not the only song on the album with parenthesis – they all do! The track opens with a driving bass, soon accompanied by precise drums. I feel like sections this striped down are rare and have to be incredibly tight to be successful so it is a good thing that the band’s delivery was 100% on point. The subdued guitar and Weiss’s voice come in together and nicely compliment each other. Lyrically, the song takes on the deep seeded issue of police brutality and the virtual inability to protest against it. The first lines show Weiss’s sheer frustration “I can’t see straight, I ball my hands into fists/ Electric current but I guess I should get used to it/ They say we won’t let you care for a god damn thing.” Throughout the whole song the heavy, emotional message comes through both in the words sung and the somber tone of Weiss’s voice. This creates a hard hitting piece of work on both the musical and emotional levels.
There is no doubt that Pets Hounds is a highly anticipated this year and this song makes that excitement even more justified. “Class Action Force” brings the so-called emo revival feels, but supplies them in a way that is more easily accessible to a broader audience. Pet Symmetry could even grow to be the new “emo for people who don’t like emo.”
