Throwing it back to summer evening drives.
When you’re driving & it’s 7pm but it’s still light out and 71 degrees and the sky is purpleish and your music is blaring and your windows are all the way down, I need that.
From February, but I love the vibe from this drive on the way home
Definitely needed a evening sunset drive with loud music with the best friend
Evening Explorations
Something about the land West of Highway 66 draws me in. Perhaps it’s the pleasant view of the Rocky Mountains, or the tranquility of the vacant dirt roads, or the endless fields of grain and corn, or perhaps it’s because it’s where I shared a last hug with the guy I had a crush on last year.
Each time I drive along Highway 66, if I have time to spare, I will give in to the countryside’s call and turn onto the narrow dirt roads. I'm supposed to go straight home, but the countryside pulled me in. The pink-orange rays from the sunset reach up into the sky from behind the blue mountains, almost like a child’s drawing. The music blares from my radio, and I sing freely because I am the only one in the car. Nobody really needs me to be home right now.
I turn left, go on for a little while as the sunset distracts me, then I see a fork in the road. Right or left? Right. I drive on, then I look to my left to see a little road with a rustic looking fence surrounding a small herd of black cows. Picture perfect. I turn and stop the car to take a picture. I put my phone down and turn the car around to head home. I accelerate and realize that these cows are running along side me. I smile in admiration. They look at me and my car as if they know me and want to play, but I need to get going. Maybe I’ll go back to see my new friends tomorrow.
I finally get closer to home, but I don’t want to go home quite yet. I’ll take a turn here. I’ve passed this road almost every day, but I’ve never gone down it. I wonder what I’ll find? I turn and go on to find that the road ends where a little walking path leading into the golf course begins. So that’s what’s over here. I turn around and head back, but wait! There’s a hilltop view of the old Sugar Factory over here. It’s even prettier at dusk, when the city lights are speckled behind it. More pictures. Okay. Now it’s time to go home. Do I have to? I want to get even more lost to see what I can find. You’d think eighteen years of living in the same small city would give me enough time to know every corner and crevice, but no. There’s still so much this hermitic soul hasn’t seen.
These streets are starting to look familiar, so I guess I’m not lost anymore. It’s time to go home. I’m still feeling adventurous, but I’m at peace. I like this feeling. Let’s do this again.
