HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!: INTRODUCTION TO CORROSION COUNT

★ Deva, as a wielder of the ALEPH E.G.O. Set "Mimicry", can be influenced by it in a number of fun and interesting ways. Although her stats are stacked to high hell, making her one of the most powerful Agents in the Facility, ALEPH gear is no joke... especially when your own personality and principles align with the Abnormality whose E.G.O. you are using as much as Deva's does.

While it primarily acts to make her more sociable and talkative or prone to... well... mimicry, she is also susceptible to E.G.O. Corrosion of any and all severities depending on what happens to or around her.

The Corrosion Counter mechanic is just that— it counts the level of influence that Mimicry has on her. She can gain or lose Count depending on how she reacts to or feels about certain things. Not only does this allow me to flesh out certain aspects of her character, it also allows me to put Mimicry's influence on her into the spotlight. This blog's about Deva and Nothing There, after all!

Corrosion Count ranges from 0 to 10, with 0 being little to no influence and 10 being complete assimilation¹. Deva typically remains at around 3 Count, although even at fairly high Count she can come off as startlingly functional and normal... for a given value of such.

Deva can Panic² or reach low SP without Corroding. Although Corrosion Count is tied to her mental state, Count represents a specific aspect of it.

¹This tends to lead to the day restarting, as Deva is quite valuable... and also rather dangerous when insane. Goodbye!

²Deva's Panic Response is Wander. For every Corrosion Counter beyond 3 that she has, however, she gains a +10% chance to enter Murder instead. This means that she has a maximum of 60% likelihood she'll go on a killing spree, as she will automatically enter it once she hits 10 Count unless something super special (à la the Power of Love) happens.

TL;DR: Deva can turn into The Creature if you bother her enough in the right ways.

there’s something about downtown tokyo that seems to lure young people to it. with its assortment of small boutiques and foreign restaurants, it was no surprise that it attracted tired college students, sulky high schoolers and overworked graduates. in the neon lights of the evening, the guests’ skin would be tinged with their fluorescent colours as they walked, gossiping about a new idol group as they bit into taiyaki that were encased in pastel paper pouches.

as the late hours approached they would make their way to the resthouse of the hormonal, heartless and hungover: cheries café.

cheries was a place where one could forget oneself and one’s life through a small sip of a caffeinated hug-in-a-mug or one of their french hybrid pastries. the fairy lights complimented the tan walls of the café and the pastel countertops gave it the sense of mature innocence. the mezzanine’s worn armchairs and tales were where every rumour’s source was situated, where every relationship started and where every friday night out began.

so, as the night falls, pull on a varsity jacket, wipe off the smudged mascara and walk yourself to the resthouse. the entranceway is lit with rose-coloured lanterns, warming your cheeks with a wistful sort of embrace. in the second your eyes meet the neon sign whispering the cafe’s name, you feel at home- you can almost hear your mother making your favourite red pepper omelettes and your father singing to himself as he picks flowers from the garden. And whilst this utopia-like reality embraces you, you find yourself making your way up the stairs paved with mismatched flower pots.

empty your heart as our waiters serve you a tall glass of rose milk if you arrive in the summer to calm your nerves or a steaming cup of brown sugar milk and a gingerbread man to warm your soul in the winter.

hold on darling, things may seem bad now but in one sip of your drink, you’ll be at home.
