she didn't fall with a crash or a bang, didn't sail lithely to her feet to land with the grace of a pouncing feline, but as her world and her bed and her dreams dropped out beneath her and the floor went screaming away into the darkness she'd known would one day swallow her whole, she did the only thing she knew how, trusted her instincts, opened her dark eyes wide, and clawed at the air for purchase.
she'd never expected to find it, but her claws and blades had dug inches deep into porous rocks. and again, she found herself screeching, tumbling against the wall, claws and blades sparking against the friction, she fell like a comet's tail, burning red against the darkness like the fireball she was, followed by the sound of eroding blades. it was not the light or the heat or the noise that disoriented her, nor the sudden loss of her sleep or her position that had shaken away her bearings, but the sudden envelopment into the embrace she'd been waiting for weeks to feel again.
she was tumbling into darkness, and upon that realization, she released herself from her hanging slide, and dove straight into a freefall. it was about time. it was a set of exposed incisors and full moon eyes that reflected the glow of ancient glyphs as they wove her way up her wrist, burned themselves into her skin, and it was her overwhelming sensation of exuberance that distracted her from her link to others in freefall.
nina took a slide against a wall at her back, found her footing moments later against the cold earth below, crossed and wiggled her toes against it with a grin.
though something contrasted with her welling excitement, and it was taken in through narrowed eyes, a sense of confusion, wariness, a fear of the darkness, sensations that were all too foreign crawling just under the surface of her skin. she felt it then, the hair on the back of her hair bristling, standing at attention as she'd have once raised hackles and flashed blades at the sign of a threat. her nerves were suddenly stretched thin, and on this weak string, she treaded, attached to what pulsed at the other end, a dog on a lead.
the insignia on the back of her palm burned once more, and with deft motions of working fingers that which covered it was removed, an invitation was left.
" our lives are linked. whose lives? "
again, dark eyes took in the shadows, and just as she'd adjusted to the darkness, she too found a link to the senses of others in the void. that chaotic smile cracked again. she didn't do chains, but this would be fun.
" so what happens if i murder you all right now? "
