Another reportage illustration from the @nycmarathon last year. I imagine the walk through the park after the finish is like nothing else. This one is going into my new and improved portfolio along with a few others like it. I'm aiming to do more live drawings like this throughout 2019 as a professional. From sporting events to concerts to street fairs, I love seeing other people in their element, and it would be a great privilege to have my drawings in an article about their events. Last night my illustration class visited Ogilvy and met with the director of their sketch group. It. Was. Awesome! What really impressed me was how quickly their illustrators work across totally different mediums. In the morning, they might paint portraits of business leaders for a corporate conference the next day. Then, in the afternoon, they might cut paper stencils for an animated GIF that a startup needs ready in two days. Later in the week, the might be using 3D printers. The turnover looked insane. The director was very encouraging when reviewing my work. He and a couple illustrators (former students of the class!) said the speed comes with experience, and the work I'm doing now is on a good track. They suggested I allow myself to cheat more: use photo references, trace things, draw straight into photoshop etc. I taught myself to draw by sticking to opposing principles - draw from life, draw with pen and paper, etc - so this is all new to me. But I left last night feeling more excited than ever about what I can do moving forward. There are so many cool things to make in this life. I am very, very lucky. For those of you artsy people, I highly recommend Grant Shaffer's class at SVA. He has been an excellent resource and a great coach. I am sad that his class is nearing an end, but also deeply grateful for what it started.
