Another beautiful painting by Jamaican artist Everald Brown.
The great Jamaican artist Everald Brown.
The right religion is self-consciousness -- and each man must come into his own -- music is a self-conscious thing...it penetrates.... Our forefathers didn't play music for you to just jump up. It is a conscious thing, to do works. Some people take the music to carry water, some use it to catch fire. When you play music, you must follow the sound.

Everald Brown was a self-taught Jamaican painter, sculptor, musician, mystic, and seer. Though raised a Baptist, he followed Rastafarianism and Revivalism later in life. Brown’s artistic inspiration stemmed from these Afro-Christian cults; he used natural imagery full of biblical references, signs, and symbols. He is known as the father of the Intuitive Artists and later was categorized as a visionary.

Natural History’s focus on taxonomy, naming and the environment has...made it an important site and vehicle used by modern and contemporary artists to explore the relationship between power and knowledge and articulate postcolonial critiques of enlightenment humanism and the systemic violence of slavery and colonialism. [...] The Natural Histories exhibition, which is curated by National Gallery Senior Curator Nicole Smythe-Johnson and Assistant Curator O'Neil Lawrence, builds on these critical explorations. - National Gallery of Jamaica announces its latest exhibition, slated to launch on April 28th, 2013.
