Wild theory about what it means to become a mother (merciful)
I strongly suspect that a ‘Mother’ is a realised consciousness manifesting as a person, and not a literal person. Daughters and Granddaughters are people but Mothers are just consciousness.
So becoming a ‘Mother' means that the consciousness of the realised granddaughter merges with all the other mothers that came before. So, for example, 'Mother Artifice' is not just the person/granddaughter who became Mother Artifice but rather the aggregate consciousness of all the other Mother Artifices that came before them as well.
So if Dot were to become the new Artifice their consciousness would merge with the present Artifice and ‘Mother Artifice’ would no longer manifest in the form/personality that he presently does - the form that Everett is attached to. Because Everett is super emotionally attached to Mother Artifice, she blames Dot for the future loss of her loved one, leading to all the explosive emotions and hatred.
This could also explain a lot about Artifice and Cleo’s confrontation in episode 14. Artifice warns Cleo that Dot will no longer being the same person after they become a mother, so it is effectively useless to form a relationship with them. And Cleo retorts that she sees Mother Artifice having relationships with people and does not understand why Dot would not be able to as well.
If a granddaughter were to experience realisation and merge with the consciousness of the ‘Mother’ they are to become, it explains why ‘Mother Artifice’ can have relationships with people but ‘Dot’ will not be able to do so - because ‘Dot’ will no longer exist.
Dot and Everett and Artifice
Very curious about what the deal with Everett and Dot is.
Dot is from the Coenobium while Everett is from Midst. Dot is 19, effectively still a child. Everett was 8 when Midst's moon fell, making her present age 38 - an adult.
It has also been suggested that Dot hasn't travelled outside the fold prior to the expedition.
Where and When could their paths have crossed to produce a tension so explosive?
Whatever happened clearly occurred way before the expedition, because Everett was unhappy about Dot's presence on the journey since Day One.
How is Artifice related to this.
In EP 14 Everett suggests that Artifice has saved her life two times.
Clearly the second instance is when Artifice deactivates the fold spreading in Everett's body after the fold-light explodes in Ep 13. Of course the argument can be made that Artifice helped Everett process the trauma of the Midst moon fall - and that's the first time.
HOWEVER! Given that Everett was on a ship when Midst's moon fell - however traumatic the event was - her life was not directly in danger. So that could not have been the first instance of Artifice saving Everett's life.
This leads me to think that Artifice was present during or for the aftermath of whatever transpired between Everett and Dot. The event/ Dot's actions somehow threatened Everett's life and that is the first time Artifice saves her life.
Whatever it was, may have happened in the fold, perhaps the Lazaretto or Coenobium, since Dot hasn't travelled outside it before.
How is Micky related to this.
honestly im not really sure?
I'm assuring that Micky knows the reason behind the conflict, and is largely civil with Dot. Micky holds Everett back from lunging at Dot in ep 14 (although I suspect this is largely for Everett's benefit rather than Dot's).
In ep 12 we that while Everett was instantly uncomfortable with being Dot's LARP partner, but Micky and Dot seemed to get along fine enough.
of course, this is Cleo's POV and we don't really know what's transpiring between them.
So much intrigue...
