Unfortunately I couldn’t find the name of this Rhododendron cultivar but it had these beautiful peachy-orange coloured flowers. These evergreen shrubs need an acidic, moist soil in a sheltered location.

A bushy evergreen shrub Daphne laureola (spurge laurel, copse laurel, dwarf bay, wood laurel) grows up to 1.2m high. It is a British wild plant of hedgerows and edge of woodland but is a useful garden plant with greenish-yellow flowers in late winter and early spring. Be careful as the plant contains irritating toxins in the sap, so it is best to wear gloves and other protective clothing when pruning the stems.

The evergreen shrub Osmanthus x burkwoodii will make a large shrub, but can be pruned to create a hedge or in this garden has been trained into a cloud formation. This spring flowering shrub, even when pruned, produces clusters of tubular white, fragrant blooms. It is best pruned after flowering has finished and in this form further pruning may be needed to remove extension growth to retain the shapes of each ‘cloud’.

The Vaccinium glaucoalbum (bilberry, grey-white blueberry, Himalayan huckleberry) was covered with black berries covered in a white-bloomed, these are edible but with a tart flavour. This is a spreading evergreen shrub that is ideal for a woodland garden with an acidic soil.

The slow-growing Rhododendron davidii was named after the French missionary David, who found the plant in West Szechwan, China, in 1869. The species Rhododendron do not have the hybrid vigour of named varieties, but this one will flower while the plants are still young.

Even in the winter it is possible to find a few flowers on Hebe × franciscana. This evergreen shrub is very tolerant of wind and salt spray and so can succeed in very exposed maritime positions. On Orkney the Hebe species and cultivars will freely hybridise and seeds germinate in the stone walls.
