This amazing fern, Culcita macrocarpa (tree fern, cushion fern, mattress fern), was growing in the entrance porch of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, welcome building. This large perennial grows primarily in the shade of the subtropical forests in Macaronesia, northern Portugal to north-western and southern Spain.

At the summit of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, rock garden is an amazing specimen of Ulmus glabra 'Nana' (dwarf wych elm). This is a very slow growing deciduous shrub that with time will form a small tree. The origin of this cultivar is unknown but it was listed in the Simon-Louis 1869 catalogue in France as Ulmus montana nana.

The slow-growing Rhododendron davidii was named after the French missionary David, who found the plant in West Szechwan, China, in 1869. The species Rhododendron do not have the hybrid vigour of named varieties, but this one will flower while the plants are still young.

The dramatic pink flowers of Rhododendron lanigerum cover this plant. This is a large evergreen shrub or small multi-stemmed tree. The underside of the large leaves are covered with two-layers of white to fawn indumentum (hairs).

In the early spring sunshine at Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, a large specimen of Zelkova sinica was casting a great shadow. This deciduous tree was introduced by Ernst Wilson from Central China in about 1908. The crown is typically fan-shaped often low branching and with several heavy boughs.
