Song Review: David Byrne - “Everybody Laughs”

Simple but catchy, “Everybody Laughs” announces David Byrne’s Who is the Sky? with a wink.

Set to a calypso-inspired melody that recalls Byrne’s Rei Momo era, the track makes no effort at seriousness, instead leaning on simple wordplay and rhyme schemes to provide the singer with something to sing:

Everybody laughs and everybody cries/everybody lives and everybody dies/everybody eats and everybody loves/everybody knows what everybody does, goes the opening stanza.

While “Everybody Laughs” instantly reels in the listener with its whimsy, it also repels them right back with its shallowness after a few listens. It’s not exactly a throwaway, but non-super-fans might want to exchange it.

Who is the Sky? is due Sept. 5.
