Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ Magnolia bloom final hurrah is on with late season trees still flowering but even they are starting to push some fresh green growth like this Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Rustica Rubra’ in the Camellia Garden. Evergreen magnolias including M. chapensis continue to bloom and push fresh foliage, too. Along with the beautiful flowers you can see the leaf buds forming on M. x soulangeana ‘Alexandrina’ in the third picture. 🌱🌸🌱 As the magnolia bloom begins to wane the rest of the Garden awakens with spring vibrancy—Japanese maples leafing out with neon green, fresh foliage in the Moon Viewing Garden; towering, otherworldly Puya in full bloom in the Succulent Garden; Queen protea more floriferous than ever in South Africa; classically beautiful cherry blossoms, peonies, and rhododendron in the Temperate Asia and Rhododendron gardens; Plenty more examples of beautiful, funky fresh foliage like this Podocarpus henkelii in South Africa are happening now. 💚😍💚 The Garden was closed almost all spring last year due to COVID—we send love and strength to everyone that has lost loved ones to this global pandemic, gratitude to all the essential workers including our horticultural team that helped get us through this past year, and we’re excited to safely welcome everyone out this spring—there’s a light at the end of the tunnel!
