“Visitors of a Different Size” --10/24/18
I had to laugh when I saw the bug sitting on the windowsill by my desk.
A large plastic fly of the cheap Halloween goodie-bag variety sat in the very spot where days ago a very living insect of the same size had decided to stop -- the cause of much commotion in our class.
First spotted in the recesses of one of the light fixtures, the (living) creature had sparked shrieking, shouts of murder, and basically brought the day’s lesson to a standstill until I removed it from the room and released it outside the building. Very conveniently, it had flown to the window next to where I sat, as if it realized I was the only one who wasn’t going to try to kill it, or had come to the conclusion, as I already had, that my seat had the best view in the room. In either case, it had made itself very easy to capture in the plastic cup our teacher had so generously gone to fetch for me, and given me an excuse to leave the building and enjoy the fall weather for a minute. I remembered its visit rather fondly, though my classmates might have had other thoughts.
Judging by the noises that had just come from the girl sitting behind me, the plastic figurine was probably lucky to be inanimate at that moment.
“It’s like someone thought this would be funny!” the girl was exclaiming to me.
“I think someone is mocking you,” I agreed.
“Right?”
