The Spongebob Episode No One Understands (SB-129)
In SB-129, Squidward’s desire for peace takes a surreal turn when he hides from SpongeBob and Patrick in the Krusty Krab’s freezer and accidentally freezes himself for 2000 years. When he wakes up in a weird, chrome future with robot versions of SpongeBob and Patrick, he realizes it’s not the peaceful life he wanted. After bouncing through time, he lands in a blank white void, totally alone. Scholars and fans have interpreted this moment as a symbol of Squidward’s own emptiness and how much he actually needs the chaos he says he hates. For a cartoon it’s very dark, a moment where Squidward realizes that without others, life feels empty.
The episode also aired on the last day of 1999, at the end of a century and the dawn of a new one, mirroring themes of time, change, and the search for purpose and connection.
