At the end of 5th year, James' crush on Lily had faded out and morphed into something else. For someone else. James didn't know how to deal with it. He didn't know if Remus would be able to help him and Merlin knows he couldn't go to Sirius to talk about it. But, Peter...Peter would understand. Peter, his oldest friend, would always be there to help him. Peter would never tell anyone about him. About Regulus.

Peter was angry. He had been playing second fiddle to Sirius for the past years. He had seen the looks that James and Regulus pass each other at meals. It seemed like all of his friends were giving someone a look now. Mary and Lily, Marlene and Dorcas, Sirius and Remus...and now James and Regulus. But, he would still listen to James, give him advice, and not let his true feeling be known.

Then Barty started asking questions. What is Potter going to do with Regulus, why was Potter talking to Regulus, why was Potter making heart eyes at Regulus during Quidditch? Barty was surprisingly protective of Regulus. Peter could only guess why. Soon Barty started to confide in him too and for many of the same reasons as James. Peter was Barty's oldest friend, he had no one else to go to, and surly Peter wouldn't tell anyone. Barty had loved Regulus for so long. He didn't think James deserved Regulus. James was stupid and in Barty's eyes, only wanted Regulus to feed his savior complex. Barty ranted for hours to Peter. It freaked Peter out a little. Barty's crush on Regulus was becoming more obsession.

A similar thing started with James. Barty was getting closer to Regulus, and even Sirius noticed. James started to rant about how Barty wasn't worthy of Regulus. How James and Regulus had more in common than Regulus and Barty did. Peter gave James advice to just go for it and then Barty would back off.

Peter turned to Barty and said the same thing.
