“For He has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help.” Psalm 22:24. . . How prone I am to believing the lie that in the midst of my greatest suffering, grief, or heartache, God has forgotten me. Perhaps the pain is too raw in my heart, or maybe I feel ashamed of my feelings or situation…whatever it is, one moment of suffering is enough to throw me into a state of doubt, fear, and loneliness. The God whom I know to be loving, faithful, and beyond-gracious, suddenly in my mind becomes a God of condemnation, neglect, and judgment. . . Oh how deceptive our minds can be. How do we misremember the God of whom it was said “Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed” and “His love endures forever”? How can we convince ourselves that His love for us is anything other than unconditional, eternal, and unchanging? Yes, we are broken. Yes, we are weak. Yes, we are hurting. And, if we’re honest, it s-u-c-k-s. Every time I see you, I break a little.
