Luke Castellan: an Evil Gryffindor
Hi everyone! Here’s another post about “Where I sort pio and hoo characters”. As usual, brief introduction: English isn’t my first language, so there will be A LOT of grammar errors, I’m sorry. Second, this is MY opinion, of course you can disagree with me, but let’s talk about it! This post will be shorter than the others, due to the fact is easier to explain.
Why do I think Luke Castellan is a Gryffindor?
1) The background of Luke is really complex, so I'll focus on the main characteristics of his personality. If I have to be honest, I think he’s a Gryffindor for the fact he’s story is similar to Dumbledore’s ones (even Percy’s somehow). First of all, as Dumbledore, Luke doesn’t do what he does for personal ambitious or for being powerful. The reason is more subtle: Luke wants to oust the gods for a major good, for a true sense of justice (like Dumbledore). Luke, takes the chance Kronos’ gives him (Kronos could be Grindelwald, in HP), turns his back to his friends (he can’t be an Hufflepuff for this reason) and tries to take his revenge from the gods’ “government”. His purpose is not: “I want to be powerful, I want to be great as a god.” But: “I want to save the world from the gods.”
2) He turns out to be a hero, at the end. He understands that what he does is horrible and doesn’t worth it, so he decides to sacrifice himself for the good. This reminds me on Percy’s behavior, when he, in the battle of Hogwarts, fights on the side of his family and redeems himself. I really think Luke and Percy’s are quite similar, they both abandon their friends and family, they both want to do what is right, they both want to for once to be listened and understood.
3) He does what he thinks he’s right to the entire world, he’s not thinking only to himself. His sense of justice and morality is strength and is really hard to change that. He never thinks, until the end, he does something wrong. He keeps saying why he does it and trying to have Annabeth and Thalia on his side, because he’s sure is not doing anything but right.
4) Of course his purposes are not only for the great good and justice, there are personal reasons. He’s angry with his father and with the gods, HE WANT JUSTICE FOR HIMSELF, but he’s not trying to proof anything similar to any Slytherin’s ideas if you think about it. He’s not trying to proof he’s the best, he’s the bravest or anything else. He just wants to do the right thing: that’s why at the very end he asks Percy to promise that the sons and daughters will be recognize. Even in the end he doesn’t give up on his dream.
5) Also, Luke wants acclamations. He wants to be recognize like the savor of the Olympus, like the HERO. This is a Gryffindor attitude, he wants acclamation, he wants glory, he wants to be recognize for once in his life by those who never did.
6) Luke is also brave: brave for himself, for his pride and glory. And he’s stubborn, reaaaally stubborn. Even his friends don’t manage to change his mind. Usually these are Gryffindors values.
7) What he does to Selena is horrible, really really horrible. He use his charming to “possess” her. This could be a Slytherin thing: do everything to achieve their goals. BUT remember WHY he does it. He always thinks he’s doing the right, he will do anything for save the world from the gods. Even Dumbledore does awful, machiavellian and schemer things, but he’s a Gryffindor. As I said before, we don’t have to look only the things our characters do, but WHY.
So these are the reason why I think Luke is a Gryffindor, more exactly an evil Gryffindor. At the end we know he acts like a hero, and we all cry at his death. Also, I think the most important thing that uncle Rick does with Luke is creating a character that is really understandable. We all can understand why he’s doing it, every character in the story does. Annabeth, Percy, Thalia, and so on. We can be very angry with him, but at the same time understand him. So, thank you Rick for creating this beautiful evil character.
So, thank you for reading this and, again, sorry for my grammar errors. If you want, tell me what you think, if you agree or disagree, or reblog this or like or do everything you want lol xx
