Friede was looking very troubled, and Mollie noticed.
"What's wrong Friede? You don't seem very energetic."
Friede sighed. "It's just.... Orla hasn't seemed like herself lately. She acts all protective around me, like she's trying to hide something."
Mollie tried to hide back her snicker. She already knew what was going on.
"Well, it wouldn't hurt to ask her, would it?"
"I guess, but..."
"Too scared?"
"NO! I just... yeah. I'm scared."
"How about I go in and ask her, and you listen from the door?"
"Yeah, I guess that could work."
The plan had formed.
_____________
Someone knocked on the door.
"Yeah, come in," Orla called.
When Mollie walked in, part of her heart sank. She was expecting Friede, but she knew he would chicken out about talking to her alone in this setting, especially since how she'd been acting lately.
"If this is about the medicine cabinet door breaking again, it can wait until tomorrow. I don't feel like fixing it right now."
Molie face palmed. "Actually, that was one thing on my list to ask you. But, I came to ask if you were sick."
Orla looked confused. "Have I shown any symptoms of anything? I don't feel sick."
"Yeah, you've shown symptoms of being heartsick."
Orla froze.
Mollie sat down next to her. "You haven't been acting like yourself lately. All this mellow energy." Mollie mentally smacked herself. She was a pokemon doctor, not a love doctor. She didn't know how to handle these situations.
Orla loosened a bit. "Mellow energy?"
Mollie sighed. "My point is, you're clearly in love with somebody and you've been acting all weird. I've noticed for a while now and-"
"It's him!" Orla loudly blurted, "It's Friede and I love him and I know I shouldn't because we're just friends but I love him anyway and I don't know what to do about it and...." Orla went quiet.
"Maybe.... you should sleep on it, and tell him tomorrow." Mollie suggested.
"Yeah... that would be nice."
"Okay, now I'll go get you a snack. That usually helps with these things."
"How would you know?"
"My family didn't like I was a lesbian. Erased all connections with her."
"Oh. That's sad."
"Yeah, the spicy snack usually help."
"Scovillian Puffs."
"Coming right up."
Mollie left and quietly closed the door.
Orla was about to tuck herself in when she heard Mollie's voice again from right outside her room.
She put her ear on the door and listened in.
"Did you hear all of it...." Mollies voice whispered.
"Yeah I..... did." Friede whispered back.
Friede?!?!? What is he doing- he heard it. Orla felt ready to scream.
"So tomorrow are you going to-"
"Do what? Kiss her?"
"Well yeah, that seems like the best option right now."
"How do I kiss my best friend? I love her like a that, just a friend. Nothing more."
At this, Orla was ready to pull away from the door. But she stayed and listened.
"I guess.... just tell her how you really feel. That you just like her like a friend, not like... you know."
"..."
"I know this I'll be tough, but you're going to have to tell her eventually-"
"I already have somebody."
Mollie went quiet. Orla felt ready to explode.
"Who.....?"
"A nice gal who works with me at exceed... she's just like Orla. Except.... she's just... Orla is my friend. I've kept that in mind. This person.... She can be my lover without it feeling like I've broken something."
"You're going to break Orla's heart if she finds out."
"..."
"I think you need to sleep on this too."
"Right."
"How long....."
"3 months."
"Oh. You are so dead."
"Yeah... I guess."
"Do you have a photo of her?"
"Here, it's on my rotom phone...."
Orla backed away from the door. She didn't want to hear anything about the other girl.
In fact, she didn't want to hear from Friede ever again.
She could live her life with someone else. Friede didn't deserve any of her affection, even as a best friend. He was a stranger to her now.
She might as well ban him from the ship-
Her chest suddenly throbbed and she fell hard onto the hardwood. She let out one painful cough after another, and with each one, a large sunflower fell to the ground. When it finally stopped, she was almost buried in the flowers.
Her door banged open and Friede rushed in.
"Orla! Are you-" his voiced faded.
Orla glared at him, burying all of the pain that once covered her face, being replaced by a look of pure anger.
