EVO Week 2015: Tekken 7

So this is EVO Week. A week where I get to combine my two favorite hobbies, writing and fighting games, in a semi-decent fashion. I hope it gets maybe one or two people interested in EVO this week. If not...well, I’m tagging this stuff under EVO Week and EVO Week 2015, so you can block it at lest. I hope you enjoy and please leave some feedback.

Tekken 7 is one of the oddest additions to the EVO 2015 line up. Being the sole representative of 3D fighters at EVO this year, took some extra effort from Bandai Namco.  On of that the game will be played on its current arcade version which has had limited exposure outside of Eastern Countries. Tekken is in for a rough fight this year at EVO, rougher than usual.

While Tekken 7 has been rather scarce to play, the game that it gets much of its new mechanics from is not, Tekken Revolution. Revolution, the 2013 free-to-play game modified from Tekken Tag 2, is where much of 7's game play comes from. Bound has been significantly decreased meaning combos off ground bounces are not as long or in some cases not even possible. Juggle combos are once again key to score big damage in Tekken especially when done off of stage hazards. Tekken 7 also introduces Power Crushers moves and Rage Arts. Power Crushers function in a similar fashions to Revolution's Critical Arts where as the move absorbs hits during attack. However, unlike Revolution's Critical Arts, the move is not fully invincible and only takes hits from mid and low attacks. The most pronounced change in Tekken 7 however comes in the form of Rage Arts. Rage Arts are the essentially the supers in the game and uses all of the Rage gauge when active. The changes in Tekken 7 seem to echo the long with standing complaint of accessibility with Tekken. Ironically, this isn't the only new Tekken game trying to do new things to be more accessible.

Pokken Tournament, the collaboration between the Tekken Team and Pokemon getting an arcade release later this week, is also framing itself a much more accessible fighter in a much more radical way. Pokken has done a lot in the way to trim itself to be more accessible. Its lacks the high and low attacks, also has a rage/power up mode with super attacks as well, and has even opted to forgo an arcade stick for wired controllers. In fact it might be too radical for some players, as many find it hard to even classify it as a fighting game, which may explain why Pokken Tournament is not present in at EVO this year.

While Tekken 7's changes aren't as drastic as Pokken, its has enough changes done to the game that will give vets a definite challenge. Its will be a test for players to adapt quickly to rise out of the pools and find their own ebb and flow with game. It will be one of the more interesting tournaments to watch and see who will come out on top. Though the true winner of Tekken 7 may not be guy who stands alone out of all of the other challengers. The real winner of Tekken 7 may just be whether or not if people both in the Tekken community and out of the community welcome the new changes.
