We Are Dancers - Josh Remick Florido
I haven't posted anything personal lately and I feel that this is appropriate given that my Evolution Movement fam and I will be competing at this weekend's Breakthrough Dance Competition hosted by Rhythm Inc. I haven't performed on a stage in front of the dance community since Prelude Norcal 2011 with my other dance fAM Aftermath, but thinking about how those month's passed preparing both then and now inspired me to write this. I hope you guys enjoy and I hope to see you at the competition this weekend!
We are dancers.
We are artists of movement. We come from different lifestyles, dance backgrounds and schools. We wake up every day and do our daily routine of getting up, getting ready, and getting through the day just like everyone else. You see, when people ask us what we “do” or what our hobbies are and we reply with the word “dance”, the idea of dancing is commonly seen as it just being a hobby and nothing more than that. But of course, they may never see it through our eyes… Aside from our priorities like work, school and family, being at practice is our "home" away from home. Our peers are our brothers and sisters and our directors are like mothers and fathers for the team. We learn and practice routines together for hours upon hours even until the early morning. We share blood, sweat, and even tears. We push not just our bodies but our minds to the limit. Some of us go to school six hours a day, or work thirty-two hours a week, or even do both; all while still trying to make time for our families and friends. We practice each song for countless hours, checking our moves to see if they’re right or wrong and for what…? A trophy? A medal? Popularity to be the next YouTube multi-million view hit? No, it’s way much more than that. It’s for the crowds, the lights, the feeling of being on that stage showing the world what we love to do and knowing we have the ability to inspire others like we were once inspired; all for just those short-five minutes… You see, this “hobby” of ours is more than just that. We are dancers, and we are artists of movement.
