While I'm not very up to date on StarboundSMP lore, I watched the most recent Asri, Aura, Nerve, and Navi lore, which I think took place on the 23rd... and OH BOY
Spoilers ahead; I'm discussing the worms
I think the way the worms are played is very interesting. I mostly watched Art's streams when it comes to the two main wormed guys, Asri and Evren, so I know the most about that.
The worms themselves warp the person, thereby melding them to themselves and making their host more comfortable with their presence. The hosts think the worm to be a good thing. After all, isn't it so nice if everyone's on the same team? Why not share a bit of brain space with each other and live in harmony? And hey, you get to keep some parts of yourself in the change.
Nerve still fancies Romeo, as Irsa fancies Aura. Sure, their morality is warped, but the worms are confident that they are doing the ultimate good. The methods and means may not match the message, but they don't believe that matters in the grand scheme of things. What's a little pain if everyone's all together in the end?
Which, in media and acting it is vital that a villain doesn't think themselves to be a villain. Otherwise... they wouldn't be a villain. People don't just do bad to do bad, they do bad because it furthers what they want. The worms are doing bad because it furthers and gets them closer to accomplishing the goal of spreading the parasite, just like how in SkyboundSMP, Vast had killed many people because they were convinced that was the right thing to do.
The worms have held on to just enough of their hosts to further their mission... taking the "useful" parts, which we saw more in depth with Nerve's haunting form in early art pieces. They prey on people's emotions towards them, knowing that they embody someone these people once were friends with and even loved. So right now they're similar to their hosts... but would it stay that way if everyone was wormed? Who knows!
