Work in Progress Whenever

I would say 'too much math, not enough writing this week,' but that would be less frustrating. 'Too much bullshit from an incompetent vendor that appears to have effectively DDOS'd themselves,' not enough writing this week.

Continuing with the theme of what my drafts look like, initial docs are frequently an explosion of bits and pieces, notes to self, etc. Eventually they get edited together into a coherent thing. My process would be modeled with an absurdly complicated exponential function.

It would be nice to have some sort of soft, sweet name to call Sindre.  An endearment which was not too endearing.  A term for a person of whom one is fond, but which didn't imply more than Evyn wanted to say.

Evyn let the children lead the game, only adding something to their story in miniature when prompted and noting sadly, that much of the play was building and rebuilding walls, and tucking the motley collection of little wooden and metal figurines—one originally belonged to Beo—into corners. The runner up was sending a noble knight out on brave but doomed mission to save his lady love. He stayed in the floor until the older girls had come and pulled the little ones away from the toys to wash their faces and hands before dinner. One started to kneel down to help him pick up, but he waved her off and carefully put the little people back to bed in their shallow box. Tuck them in safe, all warm for the night. Birgitta taught him that little ritual incantation when he was a little child, and she seemed much, much older than he was, because six years was still a lifetime or more for him then. All of them, except that oldest one of Beo’s, which was older than Evyn was now. That soldier he tucked away safe and sound—as safe as he could be—in a fold of his sleeve. He grabbed the cold stones of the hearth behind him to steady himself as he got to his feet, wincing from the lingering bruises. Sindre was hovering in the door, arms folded over his chest, and dark circles under his eyes. He didn’t sleep any better than Evyn did, and if Evyn’s nightmares were as loud for Sindre as his own brooding thoughts were for Evyn, it would be a wonder if he ever slept at all.

@atypicalacademic, I keep insisting to myself that I'm not writing grimdark, and then a WIP meme shows up, and I'm forced to confront the reality that at least from the outside, this sure as hell, looks like grimdark.

She was quick and gentle, and Evyn cooperated as best he could, but even her business-like touch left him screaming inside his head.

It's only been about a week in-universe. A very shitty week.

Umm... yeah... Angst. Leave it to me to write a character with a relatively uncomplicated positive relationship with his natal family and then... kill most of them in the first fifty pages.

And for a bit of whiplash, I decided to stick with Evyn for this as well, as he’s the only one willing to play with the idea. Tossed on shuffle, and somehow I can see him making ‘Black Velvet’ by Alannah Myles work for a striptease. (I don’t think he would look too good in black velvet though. A nice chocolate brown on the other hand. With something amber.)
