Lead Blocker John 1:29-34
Gospel
JN 1:29-34
John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”
Reflection
Lead blockers rarely get any credit. "Dude, great block!" You won't hear it. You won't find "blocks thrown" in the stat book. The only proof they occurred is the bruises the next day. "Falling on the sword" is considered honorable, but no one really wants to do it. John the Baptist gets a lot of press in the Bible, but for the most part, he is trying to explain it away. "Not me, but Jesus. One Mightier that I." John the Baptist was simply opening up the hole in the line for Jesus. A very valiant effort. Lost his head over it actually so we know he was fully committed. Many bad blocks have been thrown. Good blocks require a focus on the objective... a focus on the common good. The common good is elusive these days. It is hard to find people that open doors for others and don't expect something in return. Karma may be rumored to be a boomerang, but some people throw the boomerang and don't wait around for it to return. They are too busy thinking about the objective. It is hard getting the gospel press these days. It is hard getting the word out on the street, but we all know that it is best applied at street level. At eye level and Jesus needs some lead blockers every now and then. And sooner rather than later. Clear the hole. Good news deserves the ball. Make room and prepare ye the way.
Gut Check - Matthew 2:1-12
Gospel Mt 2:1-12
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
Reflection
Have you ever felt a twinge in your stomach that told you to run the other way? Whether it was a person or place where you got that feeling it would be hard to track the results, but I bet the large majority of "gut feelings' prove to be affirmative. Our guts tell us the way to go. Some have a terrible sense of gut direction, while others are spot on. Intuition, ESP and even coincidence, our gut feelings can be characterized many ways. The Holy Spirit can speak to our gut. Maybe our gut is actually The Holy Spirit. All I know is that my gut rarely fails me. I find that I get a more clear sense of direction when I am closer intimacy with God. When i am in the word. When I am faithful in my prayers. When I am walking with a little more obedience. Isn't it funny that we try to bend the path and we typically make it crooked and even a dead end when God has promised that he will be a light to our path. The Wise Men when with their gut. Maybe that is why they were considered wise. May we follow suit.

I Will Draw You To Me - John 12:20-33
Gospel Jn 12:20-33
Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. "I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour?' But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it and will glorify it again." The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself." He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.
Reflection
"I will draw everyone to myself". Wow, that is powerful!. Jesus said he would draw everyone to him one way or another. Each of us have a different timeframe, plan and generation, yet we are all drawn to Jesus. Some will absolutely not see it that way. Some will hang onto it for dear life. Some will never die and some are already dead literally and even worse, figuratively. Jesus had to die to cast the glory to God, yet we want a flawless life here on earth. We want freedom, safety, health, wealth and happiness. Who wouldn't want all that, but can someone who loses a husband of 50 years ever smile again? I saw it today. I saw her smile. I saw her in a new season. And her husband is probably better off regardless of how many people miss him. Life is going to try and crush you. Success seems great and then it tries to crush you. Family life is perfect and then something you overlooked tries to crush you. A crush is waiting. Just as much as Jesus is setting you up for glory, Satan is plotting our demise. Most of the time, right underneath our noses. Where we think we are safe. Jesus wants to draw us to him. He wants to let the tractor beam pull us to the place he has already set up properly. Isn't that awkward? He might actually have a better place carved out for us, yet we fight it to the end. We may think we have it figured out and even clicking on all levels, but we need to be ready to drive out the evil in our lives and the influences that pull us away from God. We reap what we sow and we can't forget that the offer of righteousness in Christ is available to all. Each and every one of us.
