@epicfailingagain YOU REBLOGGED THE RAREPAIR POST AND YOU DIDN’T EVEN FUCKING PUT ANY TAGS
HOW DO YOU EXIST WITH YOURSELF
Re Garth Nix: Have you read the new(ish) one??!?!???? - exroomie, needing someone to talk to about it
Clariel? Not yet. Is it good? Should I buy it? I was considering it in the bookstore the other week, but I got very distracted by Graceling and Fire and Fever Crumb instead.
(P.S. You should read Fever Crumb; badass girl engineer takes on the world. It’s a kids book, so not deep or thinky, but really fun to read anyway.)
theater gothic
The lighting designer passes you the gobo you need, and you focus three more lights before you meet her eyes, and you both realize that the two of you are alone. Who has been turning on and off the lights for you? Neither of you ask. There are questions that should not be asked during dark time.
The actors are going through their warm-up. From the outside, it sounds like the eery mating ritual of eldritch beasts. You know the actors are human, though. You're pretty sure, anyway. Sometimes you think the shadows through the door of the green room have tentacles. You have never opened the door to check. It is a human voice that calls back, "Thank you, 15 to house!" and that's good enough for you.
Sometimes, during the dream sequence scene change halfway through Act II, there's a voice you don't recognize on the headsets. No one else has ever mentioned it to you, so you say nothing either. But you obey when the voice that isn't the stage manager calls out warning. Just in case.
The sound board picks up radio stations that you have never heard anywhere else. Mostly you don't mind. The music is odd, but it helps kill time after sound check and before curtain. Sometimes, though, you catch the beginning of a talk program in a language you have never heard before, and then you have to dive to kill the monitors. It's never more than five minutes before the screaming starts.
You distinctly remember leaving the ghost light stage left when you locked up last night. When you come in early the next day to fix a prop, it's stage right. You murmur a quiet benediction to the ghosts and leave a note to the ATD that the SL wards are weak.
The actors cannot see the glow tape. The director complains that the stage looks like an airport runway. You have always suspected that glowtape only appears to certain people.
The props designer has fake blood under her nails. You think it's fake. You hope so anyway, and try not to remember that Sweeney Todd closed almost a month ago.
You duck when someone calls out "Heads!" You duck even though it's 3AM and you know everyone else left hours ago. You don't look up.
i just look at the first panel and i'm like "ahh your dough is sticking! *oil your bowl* ahhhh" even though that has no bearing on things being delicious. it's just so satisfying when it all comes out cleanly, and this gifset is *denying* me that pleasure. appreciating the little things. ~ ex-roomie
Ahahahaha, fair point. I am also *slightly* annoyed by their sticky-bun preparation routine, because I make the sticky sauce in the pan and just flip it upside down to get the buns out, but either way. I just really want to make real sticky buns now. But I don’t think my current friend-group would appreciate them.
I may possibly make them for my next party anyway. Food you don’t think you’ll like is culturally enriching. Or something.
Medea (and Jason, but who cares about him)
as recited by april-rainer to the Strange Book Club
[I'm compiling a list of the other general references in the first days, but I figured it would be worth it put Medea's story out there, since it's kind of important to the plot. Like most of the old myths, there are a lot of versions, and a lot of side stories; I've tried generally to stick to consensus according to wikipedia, and focus on Medea. Who is awesome, by the way.]
----------------------------------
Jason, deposed of his throne by a wicked uncle, goes on a quest for the Golden Fleece. His ship is called the Argo, hence his crew are the Argonauts. They're pretty epic themselves. The story involves Jason & co. traveling around a bunch of mythical Greek Islands, and having adventures. And, because this is Greece, sleeping with lots of people, killing (sometimes accidentally) even more. He eventually arrives at Colchis, where the king owes The Golden Fleece. Aeetes (the King) sets his three impossible tasks. However, apparently Hera likes Jason (this came as a surprise to me, because Hera is married to Zeus, King of the Gods and philanderer extraordinaire, so she has a hard life, and doesn't usually like *anybody*), so Hera convinces Aphrodite (the goddess of love) to convince her son Eros (who you might know as a distinctly creepier, less consensual realization of Cupid) to make Aeetes' daughter Medea fall in love with Jason. She promises to help him with his tasks, but he has to promise to marry her. The tasks are as follows. (1) Yoking and plowing a field with fire-breathing oxen -- Medea provides ointment that protects him against fire. (2) The field he sows sprouts an army of warriors, who will attack him. Medea told him in advance this would happen, so Jason throws a stone into their midst while they're emerging, and they all get into a fight and kill each other. (3) Finally, he has to overcome the dragon that guards the Golden Fleece, which he does with another of Medea's potions, this one that makes that dragon sleep. Aeetes is naturally displeased that Jason has acquired the Golden Fleece, and also his daughter, and throws a hissy fit. Jason and Medea run away, killing Medea's brother Absyrtus in the process (who killed him, and why, seems to depend on the legend). On the way (equally meandering) back to Jason's home country, Medea continues to be awesome and kick butt on Jason's behalf. She's generally recorded as an enchantress, and is the niece of Circe (yes, that Circe who turned people into pigs). Eventually, they get home, and Medea tricks Jason's wicked uncle's daughters into killing him. Jason then abandons Medea for Glauce, a Corinthian princess. Medea, not pleased with this turn of events, sends Glauce a poison-coated dress and crown. Glauce dies, as do two of Medea's children. In Euripides' play (which is my original source for this story) she kills her children herself to get back at Jason. After killing Jason's fiancee, Medea goes to Athens, where she ends up marrying Aegeus, and having a son with him. When Aegeus' long-lost son Theseus comes home, Medea tries to poison him (so her son will inherit), but Aegeus recognizes Theseus' sword in time and saves him. Medea then finally returns to Colchis, discovers her uncle has usurped the throne, kills him, and returns the throne to her father.
Because Hera doesn't take kindly to unfaithfulness, Jason dies alone and miserable.
SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK - ex-roomie who for some reason decided that the conference whose deadline is Monday is the one she wants to go to, rather than the one with a deadline at the end of the month. Wheeeeee! (also, im supposed to get that bookstore list from you for someone. I am not good at remembering things)
Sleep is indeed for the week!
Also, ahahahahahaha, writing conference papers in one week. High five! (That was my life last week. This week I am just proofreading all my colleague’s papers and inserting metric tons of articles. Also, attempting to explain misplaced modifiers and how they’re back.)
The link you were looking for: http://sydney.concreteplayground.com.au/news/18569/the-ten-best-bookstores-in-sydney.htm Posting publicly, in case anyone else feels in need of book stores crawls when in Syndey. Not on this list is the one you knew of is Oxford St. (I think? The second day, anyway.) and the one near Wombadyne.
Day 162
Omg work was just non-stop today! Still getting the hang of things and I swaer at times, I still have no clue as to what I'm doing/supposed to be doing. BUT I THINK I finished everything correctly.. TBD!
After work, I met up with my friend who used to be my roomie for a year! Though we didn't exactly get along as well as we had hoped during the year we lived together... BECAUSE we lived together for an entire year, we can't help but be friends since we know so much about each other! Lol. It was nice catching up!! Went to Harumi Sushi in Cupertino today! I could have sworn they had happy hour specials but they don't anymore! Bummer. Got a beer anyways!
Today I ate:
Cup of coffee with creamer
Special K Berries with reduced fat milk
Half a sandwich with sourdough bread, ham, swiss cheese, and mayo
The Golden Gate roll which was basically a Cali roll topped with salmon and yellow tail with some kinda white sauce.
A large Sapporo
Workouts: 120 seconds of plank! 2 minutes!! BARELY made it!!!! Uff really getting tough but I was proud I was able to do it since 90 seconds was tough yday~!
