(A little bit of Richard drama, and things keep getting worse for Trent. If only he had time to worry)
A couple of days went by. Work (and more than a few drinks) made Trent forget about the movie premiere - for the most part. Richard called him up, asking him if he wanted to go see Kaleidoscope at some point (without Chris of course), and Trent immediately felt a headache coming on. He promptly declined, saying that he saw a review that said it was too confusing.
“Dude, you like Lynch,” Richard said on the other line. “It can’t be that confusing.”
Trent almost said “David Lynch’s films are actually good,” but held his tongue. Instead, he said, “Whatever, I gotta get to work.” He was just finishing getting ready when Richard rang, and with every second longer that the call went, the more he was going to be late.
“But I still wanna go to the movies,” Said Richard. “Or we can go by Blockbuster or something. My brother’s leaving for a movie shoot so you can come over and-”
“Rich, I really have to get to work.”
The other line was silent for a few seconds - a heavy silence. “Okay, um, talk to you later I guess.”
“Yeah, okay.”
The line went dead. Trent sighed, and got his jacket and keys.
When he got to the apartment lobby, the landlord was waving him down from in front of his office door.
“Hey, you,” The landlord gruffly said. Trent couldn’t recall if the guy ever called him by anything other than “you”.
Trent frowned. “What?”
“I had a little chat with that son of a bitch,” The landlord began, and Trent knew he was talking about Malm. “Next month, you’re paying what everyone else pays.”
Even though Trent knew this would be coming, his heart still sank. “I can’t afford that!”
“And I don’t care.”
“At least give me another month,” Trent said, not realizing he was dangerously close to begging.
“That’s final.” The landlord placed his hand on the doorknob. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a real job to do.”
Trent was all too close to telling him off, but the landlord retreated into his office before Trent had a chance to. It was probably for the best - knowing his luck, he would end up paying twice as much as everyone else. His frown deepening, Trent swore under his breath and practically sprinted out the door. All he wanted to do was sit and figure out how the fuck he was going to afford...anything; food, electricity, the phone bill.
Goddamn it, he was going to have to dig into his savings again, wouldn’t he?
But he couldn’t think about that, not yet. The bus to his ‘date’s’ meeting place would be arriving soon, and now he really couldn’t afford to miss it. He could panic and punch a wall afterwards.
