2022 was a very uneven year for me. There seemed to be a lot more lows than there were highs, but I got through it because I’m a perpetual optimist. I’m also a realist. When I left my job at the museum over a year ago, I assumed that after a recuperative break I would return to the field. As things stand now, however, I don't see myself working as a curator again anytime soon. If I do get back into museums, I'll be back here posting about fun behind-the-scenes stuff like I used to. In the meantime, I'm shifting the focus of this blog.
New Year, New Focus
There are multiple holidays every single day of the year so in 2023 I'm going to Celebrate Every Day! I want to always have something fun and silly and joyful to look forward to no matter how the world is churning around me. Feel free to join me in this grand yet simple experiment and share what you're celebrating. Here’s wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and whatever-you-want-it-to-be 2023!

It was a dark, gloomy week and I didn’t have my car so I spent a lot of time at home. I did all the usual chores, got a lot of lap time with the cat, and decorated for Christmas. I did get out for a couple walks down by the river. I even got some sunshine this morning before the clouds rolled in again.

Remember typewriters? I got to use an old electric one today to update some cemetery lot cards.

I had several requests for grave locations today (a regular daily occurrence) so I thought I’d show off our filling system. In the upper row of filing cabinets there are 6 1/2 double drawers filled with 3”x5” interment cards of all the people who have been buried here. In the lower rows are 9 drawers with 9”x11” cards of every lot in the cemetery. We have a volunteer steadily entering all the information into a digital database but there’s still a lot to go. And I personally like the physical cards.

I learned today that there is a newspaper for the funeral home and cemetery industry.

My life has not been particularly exciting or even that interesting lately, so I’m switching to weekly updates. This week, I walked at Sperr Park, wrote at the Elmira Tea and Coffee House, edited at home, and hiked at Tanglewood Nature Center.

The training wheels came off today. Because of unplanned but somewhat foreseeable circumstances, I was on my own in the office (and will likely be for the rest of the week). I feel like I know enough to keep things running smoothly and am comfortable telling people if I don’t know something. Today went well enough, so we’ll see how the rest of the week goes.
