Description

This painting, probably based on eye-witness accounts and contemporary engravings, records the execution of Charles I on 30 January 1649 at Whitehall, after a long and bitter civil war. The inset pictures on the left show Charles as he appeared at his trial, and below, Charles walking to the scaffold. Those on the right show the moments immediately after the execution: the axeman holds up Charles's severed head while spectators hurry to dip their handkerchiefs in royal blood. The central image, with the swooning woman, hints at a parallel with Christ's crucifixion.

Scribbles from Hallendrest

I made myself sick writing this scene. Not going to share the worst bits of it.  

           She quickly laid her hands on the arm rests, her left hand over his right, as he’d instructed. She had hoped their seats would be far enough back that she couldn’t properly see what was to happen below, but the raiser they were on gave them the perfect angle. The platform, with its rail and overhang, was set up in a strange way that made one focus on the stage below.

             Go somewhere else. Don’t let yourself get sick. Kallias’ warning ran through her mind as they removed the cover from the first cage. The prisoner within let out a cry, shielding his eyes against the sudden light. He was young. Why were they always so young?

             Her breath quickened as he was led to the post where his feet were bound together and attached to the rope that ran through the pulley on the post. The executioner nodded to the guard who held the rope. He suddenly heaved, yanking the boy’s feet from under him, taking the prisoner down. Unable to catch himself, he slammed his head into the wood of the platform, causing the crowd to roar.

             Go somewhere else. She pressed her eyes closed, unaware that she was now clutching Kallias’ hand.

             “Eyes open.” He whispered harshly. “Unfocus your eyes. Look somewhere in the crowd.”

             Her heart pounding, she opened her eyes as the executioner drew his sword and approached the boy who wept and squirmed, hoping to make a difficult target. She hardly noticed Kallias take one of her fingers between his.

Writing Prompt - Death

Write a scene from the perspective of someone being taken to their execution. Then write it from the perspective of their lover, watching from the crowd. It is the lover's fault they’re in this mess.

I'm pretty sure Anne was beheaded kneeling, but not with her head on a block. she was executed with a sword, not a regular axe. The block was only for axe executions as far as I'm aware. So that's one of the few things tobg got right, but the real Anne faced death bravely. She was innocent, and by acting "scared" she would make it seem that she feared hell, so she was very calm and poised to let everyone know she didn't fear for her soul.

You know I forgot that she was executed with a sword rather than an axe, which means she may not have had a block (there are conflicted reports on how that would have been done). I still think the execution scene was over-dramatized, but I appreciate the correction. :)
