Ex-Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok mulls move to IndyCar next season
Former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok is considering a move to the IndyCar Series next season, according to a report at RACER.
The Indian driver completed a half-season at HRT in 2010 and returned to Team Lotus in 2011 in a one-off at Germany but has competed in the sports car ranks ever since. But his passion remains open-wheel racing and a move to the IndyCar Series could be in the works if he can find appropriate funding.
“The money you need to go to Formula 1 these days is almost an impossibility, and so I’m looking at IndyCar,” he said. “I was open to the idea last year, actually, and spoke with a couple of teams. Right now, it’s a question of time to get the sponsors in place, and possibly dipping my toe in the water by putting together a road course program and the Indy 500.”
The appeal to Chandhok is the parity that has defined IndyCar in recent seasons. This year alone has seen 10 different winners in 18 different winners and the chance to join in on that success is awfully tempting.
“A lot of my contemporaries — Mike Conway, E.J. Viso, and now Luca Filippi, my peers in F3 and GP2, are competitive again by going across the pond and have been very strong in IndyCar, so I think any driver who has won races in GP2 can race and be competitive in IndyCar,” he said.
Chandhok has an average finish of 18.2 in 11 starts at the Formula 1 level, following two wins in GP2 iSport and Ocean Racing Technology.
