Time for Tropes: Fossil Revival
This is one cool potential application I like about biotechnology. Although I wonder if we would have the ability to make the revived species able to thrive in our modern Earth. I hope we can because who wouldn’t want to have a live dodo as a pet or see a mammoth in a national park?
Amazon B.E. (Beyond Earth) - Restoring extinct species is just as awesome as creating novel species, and is a moral imperative if the species in question became extinct from anthropogenic factors. It is possible to recover genes from species that died out thousands of years ago, assuming that the DNA is well preserved, but it is impossible to find intact genes from species that has been dead for millions of years. Biodesigners trying to recreate specific dinosaur species can take chicken genome, shut off its current genes and reactivate dormant genes until it resembles its saurian ancestor and then tweak it further. Some terrans are even willing to recreate any extinct alien sapients they might find (a much more difficult task) as well since all sapient life deserves to live again if it’s possible.
