Sixth defendant in Central Park jogger case has been exonerated

A sixth man who was a co-defendant of the Central Park Five -- a group of Black and Hispanic teens who were convicted of beating and raping a woman in the famed New York City landmark -- had his conviction overturned on Monday, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

In his first TV interview since his exoneration, Termaine Hicks speaks out to Lester Holt after 19 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Watch the two-part interview here.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office recently concluded much of the testimony against Hicks was false, and Hicks’ case marks the 16th exoneration since 2018 attributed to its Conviction Integrity Unit.

Now a free man, Hicks says that he looks forward to spending time with his family.

A Texas jury found him guilty of murder. A computer algorithm proved his innocence.

Lydell Grant was supposed to be in prison for murder. But an emerging form of DNA technology, which has also come under scrutiny, is helping to free him in an unprecedented case.

"There's probably 5,000 or 6,000 innocent people in Texas prisons alone," said lawyer Mike Ware, executive director of the Innocence Project of Texas, which is representing Grant. "How many of them could benefit from such a reanalysis of DNA that was used to convict them? I don't really know, but this is a historic case that could open the door for those who thought it was shut forever."

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee: Director Mueller, the president has repeatedly claimed that your report found there was no obstruction and that it completely and totally exonerated him, but that is not what your report said, is it?

Special Counsel Robert Mueller: Correct. That is not what the report said.

Nadler: So the report did not conclude that he did not commit obstruction of justice, is that correct?

Mueller: That is correct.

Nadler: And what about total exoneration? Did you actually totally exonerate the president?

Mueller: No.

Nadler: Now, in fact, your report expressly states that it does not exonerate the president.

Mueller: It does.

Nadler: And your investigation actually found, quote, “multiple acts by the president that were capable of exerting undue influence over law enforcement investigations, including the Russian interference and obstruction investigations.” Is that correct?

Mueller: Correct.
