On This Day In History: August 18, 1989 saw the opening of City Center Mall in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The mall was a hit in its early years. The mall closed its doors in March 2009, and was razed along with the sky bridge over Rich Street connecting the Mall with the Parking Garage) between Autumn 2009 and Winter 2010. The Sky Bridge over High Street connecting City Center with the defunct Lazarus store was razed in the Fall of 2008. John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons was built in its place, with the park opening in May 2011, and buildings were strategically built in phases surrounding the park between 2013 and 2018.
