Vanpliku being almost entirely unrequited in every fic I write, no matter what.
Experiment 66: Vanitas is dead. Rei (Repliku) knows this. And yet that stranger from the Shinra labs looks identical to his best friend. It's unfair. He can't talk to him like he's Vanitas, because he's not. And he knows it's unfair to V-66 to treat him like he is Vanitas. But he can't help it for when he calls out his name "Vani", it's not V-66 he's reaching for.
World Eater (Vanitas' perspective): Your friend has been dead for six years now. In an attempt to get closer, you merge your body with his sword, giving yourself a new form. It's killing you slowly but you can't afford to let go, not now. Suddenly, while trapped in a world you can't escape, there he is. He's alive and well, thriving even, and he forgot you up until now. He's pristine, and you're a decaying corpse within a shell. If he forgot you, it's only fair you forget him too.
World Eater (Rei's perspective): You've been saved. Your friend has not. So you live for six years grieving him, believing that he's no longer coming back. When you go to solve a world ending disaster, who do you find but your friend. He doesn't remember you at first, but when he does, he's angry. You can't speak to him. You can't talk him out of his destruction. And now his anger at you is directed at the world and everything in it. You can't help but feel this is your fault.
Moonwalkers: Vanitas gets rescued by someone who is essentially his friend's killer and slowly starts to fall in love with him. Is he being disingenuous? Or are these feelings legit?
Can you tell I love the unrequited love trope?
Can you tell I also really love platonic Vanpliku as much as I love romantic Vanpliku?
Can you tell I haven't had the time to actually write anything?
