Went to an experimental opera show last night and it was, um, wow.
It was incredibly ambitious. An hour long in an art gallery which was a tight space with poor acoustics. So it was hard to hear the story that was sung mainly by three voices. And the overwhelming impression of the music was dissonant and dark, very few breaks which made it hard for me to connect to it.
There was a woman dancing and it didn't really relate to the work in my opinion. I think the dancer took up too much visual space.
For all that uncomfortable stuff, the last 10-15 minutes had really beautiful moments. Particularly the last sequence where the three voices were placed at different locations in the gallery, two behind the crowd and one in front, and they sang together with no accompaniment. And it filled the space in a way that all the "noise" heavy music with singing hadn't.
They had a decent crowd. There were probably 40 folks in there for the experience.
In the end, we are so glad we went to support the art. We need art. Even art that is unusual or uncomfortable. It makes us feel.
