Don’t ignore emotions.
So much great stuff about negotiation lately. This one is about how to deal with the emotions that come along with the process, which I love.
Sneak peak of the tips:
Embrace conflict quickly
Discuss the real problem
Create safety
Use facts, not threats
The example they use - a consultant leaving a firm to open a new practice - is a GREAT one because it gives you not on the employer/employee perspective, but also an office vs freelance contrast. Check it out!
Emerging Arts Leaders DC (EALDC) is a volunteer-led initiative that provides professional development, networking, and information relevant to emerging arts professionals in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.
... one of them is me!
They might want to rethink their first offer.
EALDC is about 100% ahead of the curve on Conversation topics.
Join Pointless in celebrating the close of their 15/16 season! This annual blow-out will feature live rock-n-roll, tasty hors d'oeuvres, and open bar - with wine, beer, and punch bowls galore. Friday, June 10th @ 8PM | Thurgood Marshall Center
Check out my friends and colleagues and consulting clients at Pointless Theatre’s fundraiser event, next Friday! I’ll be there and I’ll look at least as self-satisfied as I do in the event photo. Because of course I’m in the event photo.
This article from ASAE 100% backs up what our panelists said!
Miller agrees: “If you do your research, have a good backup plan, and are willing to walk away, you’ll find you have a lot of power even if you don't think you do. No one negotiates with you unless you have something they want.”
Activity!
After a 9 month hiatus -- I did not have a kid; just a thesis and an extensive job search -- I have some stuff in the works again! Some posts are queued and I’m excited to tell you more about my new job and all the other great nonprofit stuff I’m doing these days! While you’re waiting, feel free to check out my website redesign for a sneak peak, and make sure you catch this weekend’s post about an education panel I moderated! Thanks for sticking with me!
The Art of Negotiation
A couple of weeks ago, I moderated a panel about how to negotiate for the Emerging Arts Leaders of DC -- they wrote a great recap -- but I wanted to throw out my big takeaway, too!
I volunteered to moderate this panel because I have been on every side of the negotiation table, from signing contracts as a freelancer, to advancing them as a production assistant, to drafting them as a production manager. The thing I find the most interesting about negotiation, though, is how those skills creep into our everyday lives.
You use those same skills when agreeing on a deadline, going through edits on a new project, and making a pitch to a supervisor - can you tell I went from live production to arts service organization from my examples? - and they panelists did a GREAT job of exploring this. I loved hearing their tools for separating themselves from their work and for working to negotiate fairly and in their own best interests, rather than negotiating solely to win.
Be sure to check out the rest of the takeways here: http://bit.ly/1OSYqqY!
ABSTRACT - Your Mission, if You Choose to Accept it: Evaluating Planning as a Preventative Approach to Nonprofit Mission Creep in a Visual Arts Context
Mission creep, or deviation from an organization’s stated mission, is a problem that affects nonprofit visual arts organizations at the most basic level. However, the sensitive nature of mission misalignment means that it is difficult to conduct research on the causes of mission creep. Anecdotal evidence suggests that organizational planning that focuses on an organization’s impact within its community is more likely to result in programming that successfully meets its mission and serves its stakeholders, thus avoiding mission creep. This strategy, adaptive impact planning, prepares an organization to make decisions that are in line with their missions and their founding intent.
The American Alliance of Museums should more actively encourage planning, in order to create a positive association with conversations about mission, and should seek out quantitative data regarding the relationship between planning and mission success in order to determine what has helped organizations like The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles to successfully navigate mission management while others have failed to remain faithful to their mission statements.
